Awards Announced at the 7th Annual Green Power Marketing Conference In
Washington, D.C.
AUSTIN, Texas, Oct. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Green Mountain Energy Company
(http://www.greenmountain.com ), the nation's largest and fastest growing retail
provider of cleaner energy, and one of its executives were selected to receive
2002 Green Power Leadership Awards this year -- the Green Power Beacon Award
and Green Power Pioneer Award. The State of New Jersey was also selected to
receive a Green Power Leadership Award for its purchase of cleaner and
renewable energy for government buildings under a new contract with Green
Mountain Energy Company. The Green Power Leadership Awards were presented at
an awards banquet on September 30th at the Seventh Annual Green Power
Marketing Conference in Washington, D.C.
Green Power Beacon Award
Green Mountain Energy Company was chosen for the Green Power Beacon Award
for the innovative marketing materials and themes used in the company's launch
into the Texas electricity market in 2001. The company's well-conceived
campaign effort used various media tactics to effectively convey the company's
message that the wind generated electricity they offer to customers is "100
Percent Pollution-Free." Within six months of launching the marketing
campaign, over a third of Texans in key markets were aware of the Company's
brand, and over half associated Green Mountain Energy Company with key
messages like 'cleaner.' Consumer research also showed that Green Mountain
Energy Company was the number one rated company associated with cleaner energy
in Dallas and Houston.
"The innovative marketing efforts of Green Mountain Energy Company stood
out among a large pool of exceptional nominees, as a result, its '100%
Pollution Free' campaign was selected to receive a 2002 Green Power Beacon
Award," said Keri Bolding, communications director for the Center for Resource
Solutions (CRS). "Green Mountain Energy Company's hard work to promote green
power is helping consumers everywhere understand the benefits of renewable
energy and is advancing the renewables industry as a whole."
Green Power Pioneer Award
Thomas Rawls, chief environmental officer for Green Mountain Energy
Company, was selected to receive the Green Power Pioneer Award for his
outstanding contribution to the development of the "green" power markets built
on customer choice. The criteria used for evaluation of the nominations
included: continued efforts and achievements over a period of time;
contributions to building the "green" power market; and dedication to and
vision for renewable energy. Mr. Rawls has headed Green Mountain Energy
Company's environmental work since the company's inception in 1997. He has
kept the company focused on its ambitious mission of changing the way power is
made.
"Green Mountain Energy Company is very pleased to have received a Green
Power Leadership Award for our efforts in Texas. It is a wonderful testament
to the progress of our company's mission of changing the way power is made,"
said Paul Thomas, president and chief executive officer of Green Mountain
Energy Company. "The company is also very proud of Tom Rawls' achievement in
winning the Green Power Pioneer Award. Tom's environmental influence extends
beyond Green Mountain Energy Company to his leadership role in the electric
market by helping to create public policy that will work towards the
development of renewable resources."
New Jersey Green Power Leadership Award
The state of New Jersey also received a Green Power Leadership Award for
its commitment to cleaner and renewable energy in a new contract with Green
Mountain Energy Company. The contract encompasses 196 government-operated
facilities, including the New Jersey capital building. The state is
purchasing Green Mountain Energy Company's "Enviro Blend," a Green-E certified
product, generated from renewable resources such as wind, water, biomass, and
modest amounts of solar energy. New Jersey is one of only four states that
have implemented "green" power purchase programs for government-operated
facilities, firmly establishing the state as a leader in purchasing renewable
electricity power.
The Second Annual Green Power Leadership Awards is a nonprofit program
sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the U.S.
Department of Energy (US DOE), and the Center for Resource Solutions (CRS).
The award program recognizes the actions of individuals and organizations for
their contributions to the development of renewable energy sources. At last
year's award banquet, Green Mountain Energy Company received the "Purple
Heart" award for its marketing efforts in California. This marks the second
year in a row for Green Mountain Energy Company to be the recipient of a Green
Power Leadership Award reflecting the company's ongoing contribution to the
renewable energy market.
