PITTSBURGH, Jan. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The Pennsylvania Department of
Transportation announced its TOP TEN LIST of projects in the Pittsburgh Area
for 2000. The list is part of over $107 million worth of contracts with
private contractors for improvements to the Commonwealth Transportation system
serving the Pittsburgh Area during 2000.
The TOP TEN was developed by the District Engineers Office after reviewing
32 planned projects and surveying key staff members regarding traffic impacts
for the over 1.2 million motorists in the immediate Pittsburgh/Allegheny
County area.
10: Route 65 -- Bellvue & Leetsdale -- building center-of-the-road left
turn lanes -- TRAFFIC MAINTAINED with work area lanes closed during widening.
$2.4 million -- 23,000 motorists a day.
9. Route 28 at 8 -- Sharpsburg & Etna -- continuation of 5 year project to
replace bridge decks in the interchange -- TRAFFIC MAINTAINED single lane
southbound to Pittsburgh while widening of 28 to accommodate bridge and Route
8 northbound exit occurs. $4.7 million for this year and work in 1999 --
40,000 motorists a day.
8. Tri-Boro Expressway Route 130 Turtle Creek & Wilmerding -- Total
reconstruction of 4 miles -- TRAFFIC MAINTAINED single lane in each direction.
$5.2 Million -- 9,000 motorists a day.
7. Ardmore Blvd. -- Forest Hills - Concrete patching and then an asphalt
overlay along 3 miles -- NO RESTRICTIONS between 6-9 a.m. and 3-7 p.m. --
contractor allowed to work all other hours and must maintain at least one lane
of traffic in each direction. $2.2 million -- 27,000 motorists a day.
6. Allegheny Circle -- City of Pittsburgh, Northside -- Total concrete
roadway replacement. Contractor will begin after the Pittsburgh Marathon
Olympic Trials in May -- traffic and access to parking will be maintained
during baseball season. $3.6 million -- 6,550 motorists a day.
5. Route 22/30 -- North Fayette between Route 30 & McKee Road -- two year,
2 miles total roadway concrete rebuilding. TRAFFIC MAINTAINED crossed over
onto one side of roadway with single lanes in each direction. $4.5 million
-- 18,000 motorists a day.
4. McKnight Road -- North Hills between Babcock Blvd. & Nelson Run --
replacement of "box-beam" median with concrete median repair and resurfacing
of roadway and ramps. TRAFFIC MAINTAINED in right lanes while work conducted
in center lanes. 40,000 motorists a day.
(NOTE TO MEDIA: "McKnightmare Road" was borderline cute and much overused
during the last millennium lets get more creative in this one.)
3. Route 51 -- Bausman to Maytide -- two miles of milling and resurfacing
worth $1.7 million during nights and weekends.
Route 51 -- Provost to Lebanon Church Road -- three miles of milling and
resurfacing worth $3.1 million during nights and weekends.
2. Route 88 at 51 -- Total roadway and bridge rebuilding. NORTHBOUND 88
TRAFFIC CLOSED with 3 DETOURS, Conner Road top Route 19. Castle Shannon Blvd.
To Scott to West Liberty.
McNeilly to 51. Southbound traffic unaffected. $4.2 million --
19,500 motorists a day.
1. FORT PITT BRIDGE INBOUND RAMPS TO PITTSBURGH.
March 1 to July 1 -- ramps to Liberty Avenue & Boulevard of Allies CLOSED
for total replacement. 2 DETOURS -- I-376 to Grant Street. Route 51 North to
West End Circle, West End Bridge to I-279 North Shore Expressway to Fort
Duquesne Bridge.
July through Light Up Night -- November 17, 2000 Bridge over Point State
Park ("Portal Bridge") to Fort Duquesne Bridge, 10th Street Bypass and Fort
Duquesne Boulevard CLOSED. DETOUR -- Liberty Avenue Ramp to Stanwick to Fort
Duquesne Bridge.
THE FORT PITT BRIDGE AND TUNNEL WILL REMAIN OPEN AT ALL TIMES. Work on the
tunnel and bridge is scheduled for 2002 inbound and 2003 outbound.
$12.7 million -- 58,000 motorists a day, however it affects the over
148,000 motorists using the tunnel and bridge everyday.
These projects are part of PennDOT's M-1-Maintenance First Program to
repair, replace, rebuild the Commonwealth's Transportation Infrastructure.
All work listed will be done by private contractors according to the
lowest bid process. Schedules are subject to change and weather conditions.
