SDG&E Begins the New Millennium With No Y2K-Related Problems

SAN DIEGO, Jan. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- When the clock rolled over to the new
millennium, San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) today reported no Y2K-related
computer problems.
Currently, there are no electricity or natural gas outages in SDG&E's
service territory.
Previously, a few minor weather-related outages affected customers in the
Lemon Grove, Otay Mesa and Pacific Beach areas of San Diego. No more than
500 of SDG&E's 1.2 million customers were without power at any given time
during the evening.
As part of its Y2K preparedness efforts, SDG&E opened its Emergency
Operations Center and had employees on duty around the clock to monitor the
companies information systems, as well as its electric and natural gas
delivery grid, and to respond quickly to any potential problems.
"I am pleased to report there are no Y2K-related problems in our
operations," said Edwin A. Guiles, president of SDG&E. "New Year's Eve 1999
was just like any other night, with a few isolated operational incidents due
mostly to weather-related causes.
"My thanks go out to the many SDG&E employees who have worked diligently
over the past three years to plan and carry out an intensive Y2K-readiness
program to ensure that our customers enjoyed seamless energy service with the
changeover to the new millennium," Guiles said.
Since 1996, when SDG&E began its $20-million Y2K preparedness effort, the
utility reviewed more than 500 computer systems and replaced or upgraded
systems as needed. After changes were made, SDG&E tested its systems.
San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) is a regulated subsidiary of Sempra
Energy, a San Diego-based Fortune 500 energy services holding company. SDG&E
is a public utility that provides service to 3 million consumers through
1.2 million electric meters and 720,000 natural gas meters in San Diego and
southern Orange counties.
