MINNEAPOLIS, Jan. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Crediting five years of preparation by
its employees, Reliant Energy Minnegasco today said it experienced no major
problems and continued to provide safe, reliable natural gas service to its
customers during the transition from 1999 to the Year 2000.
Founded in 1870, Reliant Energy Minnegasco serves about 660,000 customers
in more than 240 Minnesota communities, making it the state's largest natural
gas distribution company.
"Our systems performed exactly as expected," said Gary Cerny, Reliant
Energy Minnegasco, president and chief operating officer. "We're delighted to
have this milestone behind us and to enter our third century of operations on
a such a positive note.
"I want to thank the hundreds of talented Reliant Energy Minnegasco
employees who helped deliver on our commitment to provide safe, reliable
service during the transition," said Cerny. "On behalf of my colleagues, I'd
like to wish all Minnesotans a safe, comfortable, happy New Year."
Reliant Energy Minnegasco launched its Y2K readiness assessment in 1994
and began updating its systems in 1997. Hundreds of employees worked on the
project -- eliminating the need for substantial outside support and thus
avoiding any impact on customer costs. Additionally, about 200 Reliant Energy
Minnegasco employees are working all or parts of this weekend to meet
additional communications needs and provide a prompt response to any
unforeseen issues.
Headquartered in Minneapolis, Reliant Energy Minnegasco is the state's
largest natural gas distribution company, serving about 660,000 residential,
commercial and industrial customers in more than 240 communities. The company
is a division of Houston based Reliant Energy (NYSE: REI), serving nearly
4 million electricity and natural gas customers in the United States.
Reliant Energy Minnegasco also provides non-regulated services through its
Home Service Plus business, which offers a broad range of home services
including: heating, cooling and appliance repair service plan; locally
monitored home security systems; sales of heating and air conditioning
equipment; exterior home maintenance services and other home comfort products.
