ATLANTA, Jan. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- BellSouth (NYSE: BLS) moved into the first
full business day of Year 2000 with all networks and supporting computer
systems operating normally.
"We've been monitoring our networks and systems all weekend, and it's been
business as usual," said Rick Harder, BellSouth's Vice President for Year 2000
Operations.
BellSouth has also been performing a positive validation of its systems.
Although a few Y2K incidents have been discovered during the validation, all
have been minor and none affected customer service.
BellSouth has worked on its Year 2000 project for four years. Hundreds of
thousands of employee and vendor hours have been put into the project to
ensure its success.
Both landline and wireless calls went through normally as midnight rolled
over on New Year's Eve.
"We want to thank our customers for not overloading the network on New
Year's Eve," said Harder. "They helped keep the phone lines open for emergency
services, and for that we are very grateful."
BellSouth also made sure that all Enhanced 9-1-1 centers were receiving
and processing calls during the holiday weekend.
Some reports have suggested that fears over Y2K were overblown and that
corporations spent millions of dollars unnecessarily.
"This has been time and money well spent," said Harder. "Our customers
made a seamless transition into the Year 2000 because of the talent and
dedication of BellSouth employees. Had it not been for the collective
preparation efforts that did take place, the world would be in a far more
chaotic state today."
Any customers who do experience difficulties should report them through
the normal channels. Repair numbers are listed in all BellSouth phone books.
BellSouth is a $25 billion communications services company. It provides
telecommunications, wireless communications, cable and digital TV, advertising
and publishing and Internet and data services to nearly 36 million customers
in 19 countries worldwide.
