American Eagle Outfitters Reports December Total Sales Increase of 45.1%

               U.S. Sales Rose 31.9% to a Record $210.8 million

                    U.S. Same Store Sales Increased 11.8%

    WARRENDALE, Pa., Jan. 3 /PRNewswire/ --
American Eagle Outfitters, Inc. (Nasdaq: AEOS) today announced total sales for
the five weeks ended December 30, 2000 increased 45.1% to a record $231.8
million from $159.8 million for the five-week period ended January 1, 2000.
Total sales for the five weeks ended December 30, 2000 includes $21.1 million
from the Thrifty's/Bluenotes operation that was acquired effective October 29,
2000.
    American Eagle Outfitters' U.S. sales for the five weeks ended
December 30, 2000 increased 31.9% to a record $210.8 million from $159.8
million for the five-week period ended January 1, 2000.  AE U.S. same store
sales for the December 2000 period increased 11.8% compared to the
corresponding five-week period last year.  This compares to a 16.9% same store
sales increase in December 1999.
    Total sales for the forty-eight week period ended December 30, 2000
increased 29.4% to $1,022.6 million from $790.3 million for the forty-eight
week period ended January 1, 2000.  Total sales includes $30.0 million from
the Thrifty's/Bluenotes operation that was acquired effective October 29,
2000.
    American Eagle Outfitters' U.S. sales for the forty-eight week period
ended December 30, 2000 increased 25.6% to $992.6 million from $790.3 million
for the corresponding forty-eight week period last year.   U.S. same store
sales for the 2000 period rose 5.8% compared to the corresponding forty-eight
week period last year.
    American Eagle Outfitters, Inc. is a specialty retailer of casual apparel,
