Fort James Corporation Announces Executive Changes

CHICAGO, IL USA
    DEERFIELD, Ill., Jan. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Fort James Corporation (NYSE: FJ)
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Miles L. Marsh today announced changes in
the company's executive structure.

    Ernst A. Haberli, formerly Executive Vice President and Chief Financial
Officer, has been named President, North American Tissue Operations and
Technology.  Along with assuming the new responsibility for North American
tissue production and logistics, Haberli maintains responsibilities for Fort
James' Communications Papers business, Information Technology functions and
Capital process.  Haberli also serves on the company's Board of Directors.
    Joseph W. McGarr, formerly Senior Vice President and Corporate Controller,
has been named Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer.  His new
responsibilities include the company's Treasury, Investor Relations, Corporate
Planning & Strategy, and Corporate Development functions.  He retains
responsibility for all Corporate Controller, Audit, Tax and Productivity
functions.
    Marsh explained that the changes "are a very strong commitment to
capturing our supply-side opportunities.  Ernst Haberli brings broad general
management expertise and specific knowledge of our system to the position.  He
will provide to this area the senior management focus that we need.  Joe
McGarr has more than 20 years of financial experience with Fort James
operations and is a respected leader in the company."
    Haberli and McGarr will report to Marsh.
    B. Gregory Stroh, formerly President of the company's North American
Tissue Operations & Technology, is leaving Fort James to pursue other
interests.
