Joint Initiative by Samsung and Time Warner Cable to Create Specifications
for OCAP Compliant Televisions Advances Next-Generation of High-Definition
                     Digital Cable Products and Services

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Samsung and Time Warner Cable today
signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to commemorate the success of
initial discussions regarding Samsung's development of a cable-ready
television set with two-way connectivity support based on Cable Television
Laboratories, Inc.'s ("CableLabs(R)") Open Cable Applications Platform
(OCAP(TM)) standard. The MoU marks the commencement of a collaborative effort
by the two companies to aggressively further the transition to digital
television.
Samsung hosted the signing ceremony during CES 2005 with GS Choi,
President and CEO of Samsung Electronics C, Digital Media Division, and Glenn
Britt, President and CEO of Time Warner Cable. The event took place at the
Four Seasons Hotel (3960 Las Vegas Blvd. South) in Las Vegas at 9 a.m. on
January 6th, 2005.
"Samsung is committed to leading the digital television transition, and
ensuring access to digital cable is an integral part of that effort," said GS
Choi, President and CEO of Samsung Electronics Co., Digital Media Division.
"Samsung is excited to take this important step with Time Warner Cable, an
industry leader that has worked aggressively to accelerate the deployment of
OCAP, thus helping us to launch a new category of products available at retail
that include OCAP(TM) and the CableCARD(TM) interoperability necessary to
enable interactive digital cable services."
Glenn Britt, President and CEO of Time Warner Cable said, "The joint
efforts of manufacturers, engineers and cable service providers have enabled
swift development of the next generation of interactive cable services and
associated devices. We are pleased to work with a recognized innovator such
as Samsung to further advance both the technology and the availability of
interactive cable products and applications to consumers."
Samsung and TWC will jointly write specifications describing the
functionality of the OCAP Compliant Television and how the OCAP Compliant
Television operates within a cable network. The specifications will include
compliance with relevant OCAP supported standards such as two-way capability
or the ability to receive, decrypt and display encrypted content distributed
over TWC's cable network, and the ability to receive, install and operate
TWC's OCAP compliant Digital Navigator (the "ODN") through remote download
over TWC's cable network. Widespread conformity with these standards will
enhance programming and allow consumers to benefit from an unprecedented level
of entertainment interactivity.
M.Y. Shin, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Samsung
Electronics, Co. Ltd., added, "We believe that enabling the interactive
capabilities of cable services is a great way to spread the benefits of
digital television and specifically HDTV. This interactive digital cable
ready (iDCR) HDTV is one of many OpenCable televisions that Samsung has
developed and will rollout in collaboration with Time Warner Cable, other
MSOs, CableLabs and retailers."
Mike Hayashi, Senior Vice President for Subscriber Technology and Advanced
Engineering at Time Warner Cable, and Chairman of the OpenCable Certification
Committee, said, "Time Warner Cable is proud to serve our consumers by working
with CE leaders such as Samsung to build the future of cable television. TV
programmers, MSOs, distributors and a growing array of third parties are
developing OCAP applications from games to T-Commerce that will enhance the
quality and flexibility of programming coming in to TV viewers' homes."
