Live Interoperability Demo Featured at CES, January 6-9, in Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS, Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Bringing high-performance, cutting edge
digital video solutions to market quickly, Modulus Video, Sentivision and
Texas Instruments (NYSE: TXN) (TI) today announced the availability of an
MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 decoder technology platform for IP set-top boxes leveraging
Texas Instruments' DM64x digital media processors. Sentivision's IP-based
set-top box will show H.264 MP@ML live interoperability with Modulus Video's
ME1000 AVC SD Encoder at the head end, demonstrating the ability to decode
with all tools active at D1 resolution. The demo, available in TI's suite at
CES, is a testament that high resolution encode/decode can be accomplished
today when using high performance digital media processor technology.
"Because of their programmable nature, TI's digital media processors help
propel the diffusion of new industry standards, such as H.264 and Microsoft's
VC-1," said Suman Narayan, marketing manager for the Streaming Media Group at
TI. "Today's announcement of interoperability with Modulus Video encoders
demonstrates that complete end-to-end systems supporting advanced codec
technology can now be deployed."
The ME1000 AVC encoder from Modulus Video is a real-time, full-resolution
SD encoder. Backed by the digital broadcasting expertise of Modulus Video,
the ME1000 is a solid choice for any broadcast-quality video application. The
ME1000 compresses in real-time up to full D1 resolution for 525/60 and 625/50
applications. The compressed video stream is encapsulated in an MPEG-2
Transport Stream with output over IP multicast. The ME1000 is shipping today
and matches the available Modulus Video MD1000 AVC Professional Decoder.
"With its real-time AVC encoding capability and easy-to-deploy design, the
Modulus ME1000 is well-suited for ensuring reliable, high-quality transmission
to consumers," said Bob Wilson, CEO of Modulus Video. "Combined with the
sophisticated set-top box technology developed with TI and Sentivision,
broadcasters have a robust, end-to-end AVC system that is ready to deploy
today and provides a solid foundation for the future."
The H.264/AVC decoder is one of Sentivision's products, which also include
a reference set-top box hardware/software platform based on the TI DM64x
processor, and a real-time RTSP/RTP streaming server for media delivery. The
incorporation of a programmable TI DM64x processor allows for unprecedented
flexibility and guarantees that STB hardware will have an easy upgrade path.
"We strongly believe that only true interoperability is a sign of maturity
of a set-top box product. At Sentivision, we invest a lot of effort into
working with our partners to ensure that our products are compatible. TI's
programmable digital media processors allow us to perform that work very
quickly, without having to modify the hardware," said Jan Rychter, CTO of
Sentivision. "Our customers can also be assured that their investment is
future-proof and that if compatibility problems emerge in the future, they can
be easily fixed."
Built on the proven architecture of TI's TMS320C64x(TM) generation of
DSPs, the DM64x digital media processors achieve performance levels of up to
720 MHz and deliver exceptional video quality with next-generation
functionality and flexibility to enable OEMs to evolve designs to keep up with
ever-changing technology demands. With the H.264 solution embedded on these
processors, several improvements over existing video encoding standards are
available, including ultra-high compression ratio (more than 50 percent
against any standard for the same perceptual quality), enhanced motion
compensation and entropy coding and improved deblocking filter. The low bit
rate and network abstraction layer integration permits quality video
transmission over low and medium bandwidth networks, such as wireless, DSL or
cable TV networks.
