ESS Technology Announces Support for Super Audio CD in Its DVD Chips

Vibratto II-DA DVD Processors Integrate SA-CD Playback

FREMONT, Calif., Jan. 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- ESS Technology
(Nasdaq: ESST), a leading supplier of silicon solutions for digital audio,
video and imaging consumer electronics, today announced that it is introducing
support for Super Audio CD in its Vibratto(TM) II-DA DVD solutions. ESS will
offer reference designs for cost effective Universal disc players and Home
Theater-in-a-Box (HTiB) systems supporting both SA-CD and DVD Audio high
fidelity audio formats.
The Super Audio CD format was created by Sony and Philips to more
accurately reproduce the original audio waveform. The Direct Stream Digital
(DSD) technology used in SA-CD was originally developed to digitally archive
priceless analog master tapes. Super Audio CD provides a frequency response
of 100 kHz and a dynamic range of 120 dB in the audible range, delivering
64 times the resolution of an ordinary audio CD. Tracks on a Super Audio CDs
can be mastered in 2-channel stereo or in 5.1-channel surround.
The Super Audio CD format is gaining popularity with over 2,500 Super
Audio CD albums now released from 250 different record labels. The economies
of scale achieved through mass manufacturing processes mean that the average
disc price for Super Audio CDs has now reached the level of a top priced CD.
Bob Blair, President and Chief Executive Officer at ESS Technology stated,
"The integration of Super Audio CD playback into the DVD SOC allows for an
inexpensive all-in-one total entertainment system. The cost to enable the
high fidelity audio of SA-CD in a DVD player or HTiB system will be
dramatically reduced. ESS is excited to bring another enhancing entertainment
feature to the DVD player."
ESS will demonstrate Super Audio CD playback at the 2005 Consumer
Electronics Show in Las Vegas. A private demonstration may be scheduled by
contacting Carol Johnson at 510-492-1713 or email: Carol.Johnson@esstech.com.
