    SANTA CLARA, Calif., Jan. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Symyx(R) is pioneering
high-speed technologies to accelerate the discovery and optimization of novel
materials. Symyx' proprietary technologies, including instruments, software
and methods, generate hundreds to thousands of unique materials at a time and
screen those materials rapidly and automatically. Symyx' approach can deliver
results hundreds to thousands of times faster than traditional research
methods, at a fraction of the cost. Symyx has a large and expanding
intellectual property portfolio with over 30 issued U.S. and European patents
and over 320 patent applications worldwide, covering Symyx' methodology,
instrumentation and discoveries.
    Symyx has a diverse business model driving its growth:  Symyx provides
research services to its partners through Industry Collaborations, seeks to
license discovered materials through its Proprietary Materials business, and
offers selective access to its proprietary technologies, including instruments
and software, through its Discovery Tools(R) business.
    Symyx currently has one commercialized material, a polymer technology for
coating proteomics arrays, licensed to Prolinx(R), Inc. and a product pipeline
of twelve development candidates, all with commercialization potential. Symyx
will receive royalties or milestone payments upon the successful
commercialization of these materials.

sciences, chemical and electronic companies worldwide. In life sciences, Symyx
collaborates with major pharmaceutical companies, including Merck & Co. and
Eli Lilly and Company, for the early selection of crystalline polymorphs in
the drug development process. In addition, Symyx collaborates with diverse
life sciences companies and has discovered several materials with life
sciences applications, including the commercialized polymer licensed to
Prolinx, an X-ray storage phosphor for computed radiography licensed to Agfa,
a polymer to speed DNA separation licensed to Applied Biosystems, Inc., a
catalyst for the manufacture of pharmaceutical intermediates licensed to the
Dow Chemical Company, and polymers for personal care applications licensed to
Unilever.
