NEW YORK, Jan. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Security, enterprise business software
services and e-commerce initiatives top the list of corporate IT priorities
for 2002, according to eWEEK, the enterprise newsweekly. Wide Local Area
Networks (WLANs), 10 Gigabit Ethernet and Linux are other essential
technologies to watch during the year ahead, says Eric Lundquist, the
publication's editor-in-chief.
Security
* New and improved security technologies will arise from the results of
last year's terrorist attacks, Internet viruses and data hackings.
Currently, there is a weak link in the security chain.
Technologies to Watch
* Security products that tie databases to recognition products such as
face scanners and fingerprint products.
* Virus and bug scanning technology that is really easy for the user to
understand and adjust. Technology that is discreet and updated
constantly.
Industries To Watch
* The first place security will be implemented is at airports where a
rapid expansion of technology investment is already underway.
* Industries that handle dangerous products such as the energy industry.
* Look for the government to develop a Security 2K.1 program similar to
Y2K software in 2002.
Companies to Watch
* IBM which has launched a major security initiative and EMC.
* Visage, which makes a face scanner and Neurotecholija Ltd. of San
Jose, Calif. (but based in Lithuania) which makes a fingerprint
scanner.
Enterprise Software & Services
* Services will be the marketing watchword from many of the vendors in
2002. This year, the new incarnation of the Internet will bring
vendors even more closely together with customers and suppliers. An
example of services includes automatic Internet based updates to the
desktop of enterprise functions such as office automation.
Technologies to Watch
* Microsoft's .Net service is an XML based technology that will allow
secure connections, safe transactions and will be integrated with
existing computer networks. The release is scheduled for the second
half of 2002 but will ship in 2003.
Industries to Watch
* The financial services industries will be among the first to implement
this technology.
Companies to Watch
* Besides Microsoft, look for enhanced products from IBM (Websphere) and
Sun (iPlanet), as both companies compete to lure companies into their
service models.
E-Commerce Initiatives
* B2B and B2C ecommerce initiatives will be hot this year. While most of
the attention in 2001 had been on B2C sales, an equal amount of
interest and investment will be placed on the business to business
sector in the year ahead.
Technologies to Watch
* Secure connection and transaction technologies, including biometrics
will be hot.
* Technologies that allow the system to remember customer preference and
display products or offers on whatever the device the customer is
using.
Industries to Watch
* Regional financial institutions and retailers -- aligning products
in-store and online.
Companies to Watch
* Microsoft, IBM and Sun are the major players in the market and will
continue to be in 2002.
Other Trends and Technologies to Watch for in 2002
Networking: 10 Gigabit Ethernet and Bluetooth
* This year, eWEEK expects two much-hyped, little seen networking
technologies, will make their way into IT organizations: 10 Gigabit
Ethernet and Bluetooth.
Operating Systems
* eWEEK says that desktop environments that offer a free and competitive
alternative to the Windows OS will have significant impact on the
market. Examples include KDE 3.0 and GNOME 2.0 for Linux based
environments.
Wireless
* Continuing the leading trend that has developed over the last few
years, better and easier access to the Internet will continue to be on
the upswing this year. People will be able to enjoy wireless Internet
access with an expanding public wireless infrastructure of 802.11
networks in public spaces, corporate campuses and homes. The 802.11
standard provides wireless connectivity without the expensive and
difficult requirements of running cable to individual users.
