Supermarket to Bring Quality, Service, Low Prices and Jobs to Chicago's
'Back of the Yards' Neighborhood
CHICAGO, Jan. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Food 4 Less, the nation's leading price-
impact supermarket chain, is bringing the finest in service, quality, variety
and everyday low prices to Chicago when it opens its first price-impact,
warehouse-format supermarket in the city's historic Back of the Yards
neighborhood on Wednesday, January 15 at 8 a.m. The 59,000 square-foot store,
at 4620 South Damen Avenue near 47th Street, will be open daily from 6 a.m. to
midnight to serve customers.
"We are very excited about this opportunity to open our first Chicago Food
4 Less store in the city's Back of the Yards neighborhood," said Jay Cummins,
Vice President and General Manager of Food 4 Less' Midwest Division. "We think
Back of the Yards will be a great Food 4 Less community and we look forward to
offering our unique brand of friendly service to customers who appreciate
quality and value at everyday low prices."
Food 4 Less is a unique hybrid supermarket/warehouse store specially
designed for customers looking for quality, selection and value. Shoppers
visiting Food 4 Less stores enjoy supermarket quality with a diverse selection
of products, destination departments and special services -- all at the lowest
prices in town.
The new Back of the Yards Food 4 Less store is opening in a formerly
vacant building that previously housed a Montgomery Wards department store.
The building has sat empty for several years. Food 4 Less acquired the vacant
Montgomery Wards site last year and invested more than $6 million in
renovating the building in preparation for its January 15 grand opening as a
new Food 4 Less store.
The new Food 4 Less is expected to help the ongoing revitalization of Back
of the Yards and attract additional commercial development to the area.
"We are very pleased to cast a vote of confidence in Back of the Yards
with this major investment in the community," said Cummins. "Our new store is
bringing shopping convenience, services and jobs to this community. At Food 4
Less our goal is to offer our customers the finest service, the best selection
and the highest quality foods at exceptional value."
The new Back of the Yards Food 4 Less will employ more than 140 full-time
and part-time staff members. More than 120 staff members have been hired from
the surrounding community.
Back of the Yards Food 4 Less shoppers are sure to enjoy Store Director
Jason Cook. Cook, who boasts more than 20 years of experience in the grocery
industry, most recently managed the Food 4 Less store in Hammond, IN.
He relocated to the greater Chicagoland area last August from Southern
California, where he successfully managed several high-volume stores for Food
4 Less.
"We're excited and we're ready," said Cook. "We've been working very hard
to get the store ready for our customers. We are eager to serve the needs of
our customers and we are committed to providing the community with the finest
products and services available."
Customers visiting the new Back of the Yards store will experience the
best that Food 4 Less has to offer, including an abundance of fresh fruits and
vegetables, meats, fish and poultry, and a grocery department stocked with
thousands of products at Food 4 Less' low everyday prices.
In the spirit of offering shoppers a true, one-stop-shopping experience,
the new Food 4 Less will also feature several specialty departments, including
a full-service delicatessen/bakery offering a complete selection of salads,
deli meats and cheeses, sandwiches-to-go, party trays, and freshly prepared
take-out meals, as well as fresh breads, cookies, rolls, pies and custom-
decorated cakes for all occasions.
Shoppers on a budget will also enjoy the store's large club pack section,
"Wall of Values" area featuring many name brand products at special discounted
prices. The store also carries a wide selection of ethnic foods.
To serve shoppers, the store boasts 12 check stands and offers a wide
range of special services, including postage stamps, film developing,
motorized shopping carts for customers with mobility impairments and
specially-designed shopping carts with infant carriers. The store also has
been outfitted with state-of-the-art energy efficient equipment and lighting,
and environmentally safe refrigeration.
"We believe our new Back of the Yards Food 4 Less store offers everything
and more of what customers are looking for in a supermarket," said Cummins.
"Best of all, at Food 4 Less we offer it all at the lowest prices in town."
As an introduction to the community, Food 4 Less will make donations
totaling $10,000 to several local schools and charities, including the Cesar
Chavez Multilingual Academy, the William H. Seward Communication Arts Academy
and the General Robert E. Wood Boys & Girls Club. In addition, Food 4 Less
will present $2,500 to Holy Cross/IHM Catholic Church to support its Kids'
Cafe program, which provides nutritious meals to approximately 100 at-risk
children daily.
Cummins welcomed the opportunity to assist the community.
"Food 4 Less takes an active role in every community we serve," he said.
"It is our intention to be a good corporate citizen in the community. We will
remain open to new ways to meet community needs and to participate in
neighborhood improvement projects."
A number of special events have also been scheduled as part of the store's
grand opening celebration, including free phone cards to first 50 customers
($9.98 value), free food samples, giveaways and appearances by popular
costumed characters from Wednesday, January 15 through Sunday, January 19.
A grand opening contest features a drawing to win a 35-inch color television
and Food 4 Less gift certificates.
"Food 4 Less is committed to the community and to providing our customers
with exceptional service and value," Cummins said. "We want our shoppers to
let us know what they think about their new store and urge them to tell our
store staff. We look forward to serving the community for many years to
come."
The new Back of the Yards store is the third Food 4 Less store to serve
the greater Chicagoland area. Food 4 Less also operates stores in Burbank,
and Hammond, IN.
"Our Back of the Yards store is just the first of many stores we hope to
have in the City of Chicago. We are continuing to look for more locations
throughout the city," Cummins said.

the banners Food 4 Less in Southern California, southern Nevada, and the
Chicago area, and Foods Co in Northern California. Food 4 Less' Midwest
