Robert L. Mason Named Ninety-Eighth President Of the American Statistical Association

    ALEXANDRIA, Va., Jan. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Statistical
Association (ASA) is pleased to announce that Robert L. Mason, Institute
Analyst, Southwest Research Institute, has assumed the office of President of
the American Statistical Association, the largest and oldest professional
statistical society in North America.
    "The ASA is a highly successful professional society," said Mason. "This
is evident from the many activities conducted by its sections, chapters, and
committees.  To maintain this level of success, the ASA must continue to
improve and build on its existing strong commitment of service and support to
its members while keeping focus on its mission and vision."
    Dr. Mason is a nationally recognized industrial statistician, whose major
responsibility includes applying statistical methods to solve the data
analysis and design problems of the clients at Southwest Research Institute.
Dr. Mason received a B.S. degree in Mathematics from St. Mary's University in
1968, and a Ph.D. degree in Statistics from Southern Methodist University in
1971.  After teaching at several universities, he joined the staff at
Southwest Research Institute in 1976.  Dr. Mason also is an Adjunct Professor
at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he has taught statistics
courses since 1976.
    Dr. Mason, who joined the ASA in 1971, has had a distinguished career in
statistics.  He is the co-author of six books and has published over 100
papers in refereed statistical and scientific journals.  He has been the
recipient of several awards including the W.J. Youden Award and the ASA
Founders Award.  In addition, he is an elected Fellow of the ASA as well as
the American Society for Quality (ASQ).  Throughout his career, Dr. Mason has
always made a conscious effort to promote the statistics profession, increase
its visibility and influence, and give non-statisticians a favorable view of
the value and need for statistics.
