Wylam began summer work at the Delco Battery Plant in Muncie, Indiana, in
1955 while attending Purdue University. After graduation from Purdue in 1957,
with a Bachelor of Science degree in Metallurgical Engineering, he joined the
Delco Remy Division of General Motors as an Experimental Engineer.
In his career with GM Delco Remy, he was involved with many firsts.
Among the most notable were the introduction of the maintenance-free
automotive battery in the mid '70s and the '90s launch of the drive and
electronics components for the innovative GM EV1electric car. During the EV1

book "The Car That Could". Wylam continued to oversee GM and Delco Remy's
hybrid drive activity until 1997 when he joined Remy International.
At Remy he served initially as Director of Engineering and later became
Corporate Technology Director. Wylam helped guide Remy on its journey to
become one of the leading U.S. companies in hybrid drives. Remy partnered
with Continental AG on the ISAD system, which was later launched by GM in the
2005 Silverado truck.
In 2003, Remy began production of Allison Drive EP System(TM) system
components which incorporate an innovative Remy hybrid power technology to
improve performance and fuel economy while reducing exhaust emissions of
commercial vehicles. In 2004, Remy was awarded its first high-volume
production contract for a hybrid drive for a North American OE vehicle
manufacturer.
Wylam will continue to actively contribute to global hybrid development.
He is Chairman of Electricore, which was formed in 1993 by Delco Remy,
AeroVironment, Inc., the Allison Transmission Division of GM and the Purdue
School of Engineering & Technology. Electricore is a non-profit company,
advancing technology through public-private partnerships, having managed $150
million in developmental projects.
In recognition of Wylam's role in advancing new technologies, the William
B. Wylam Energy Storage and Conversion Laboratory on the IUPUI campus of the
Purdue School of Engineering and Technology was named in his honor in 1997.
Wylam also serves today as a member of the Board of Directors of Flagship
