TKT Names Dr. Paul M. Martha, Vice President, Clinical Affairs

    CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Jan. 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Transkaryotic
Therapies, Inc. (Nasdaq: TKTX) today announced Paul (Kip) M. Martha, M.D. has
joined the company as Vice President, Clinical Affairs.  In this role, Dr.
Martha will have overall responsibility for the planning, implementation and
management of TKT's clinical development programs and will report to David D.
Pendergast, Ph.D., Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of
TKT.
    "Kip brings to TKT more than 18 years of clinical research experience
including 10 years of clinical study management in the biotechnology industry.
His solid background in clinical medicine, involving all stages of clinical
testing for biologics, including medical support for commercial products, will
be of great value to TKT's clinical research organization," said Dr.
Pendergast.  "It is a pleasure to welcome him to TKT to fill this important
function and we look forward to the contributions he will make to further
advance our clinical pipeline."
    Dr. Martha joins TKT from Interleukin Genetics where he was Chief Medical
and Regulatory Officer and Vice President for Clinical Research and
Development for the past three years.  Prior to joining Interleukin, Dr.
Martha was Vice President, Clinical R&D at Praecis Pharmaceuticals Inc. where
he led two programs from pre-IND through Phase II and was regularly involved
in interactions with the FDA.  From 1993 to 1998 he held multiple positions at
Genentech, Inc. including Director of Endocrinology and Neurology.  While at
Genentech he oversaw three clinical development programs with studies covering
Phases I to IV, three approved supplemental New Drug Applications (sNDA) and
contributed medical marketing support for recombinant human growth hormone
products Nutropin(R) and Protropin(R).  Before joining the biotechnology
industry, Dr. Martha was an Assistant Professor at Tufts University School of
Medicine and a practicing Pediatric Endocrinologist at Baystate Medical Center
in Springfield, Massachusetts.  Dr. Martha received a B.S. in Biology from
Trinity College and his M.D. from the University of Connecticut School of
Medicine.  He received his professional training in pediatrics and conducted
his Internship/Residency at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine
and his Fellowship at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
