Smartvue Corp.'s Vision Captured by Spore's Patent Matrix Diagrams

    RALEIGH, N.C., Jan. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Smartvue Corporation, a leader in
surveillance technology, received a 2005 International CES Innovations Design
and Engineering Award last week at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) for its
S2 digital IP video surveillance solution. This wireless surveillance system
offers rapid installation and includes the most advanced technologies in
imaging, video, security and wireless communications.
Smartvue adopted a progressive approach to patent portfolio development,
similar to its products -- effective and technologically advanced -- by
selecting Spore, Inc. to map the technology space and strategically generate
its patents. When the S2 solution hit the CES Show, more than 12 patent
applications had been filed covering the S2 technology. While many product
launches are associated with their own patent portfolio, Smartvue and Spore
worked together to strategically create this portfolio in less than 90 days.
Spore offers expert consulting services and software for the various areas
of intellectual property intelligence, including: individual patent mapping,
portfolio mapping, competitive landscape mapping, evolutionary trends mapping
and invention capture. "Spore's invention capture, using Patent Matrix
Diagrams, gave me strategic perspective on the scope of existing patent
coverage. We were able to prioritize the filings to make the most of our
competitive technology advantages, while balancing costs and timing," said
Martin Renkis, founder and CEO of Smartvue.
"We not only met our due date for the filings, but we built a strong
patent portfolio in a cost effective manner that covers the unique features
and capabilities of our S2 solution," continued Renkis. With the use of
Patent Matrix Diagrams, inventors can easily review, understand and
communicate the scope of a patent application. The Patent Matrix software is
the only tool available for automatically visualizing and evaluating a new
invention prior to drafting and filing a new patent application -- giving
businesses the choice of pursuing patents that show commercial value.
"Many patent law firms may take three to six months to draft and file a
new application -- traditional methods often do not permit C-level executives
to weigh in on patent decisions as portfolios are created," explained JiNan
Glasgow, CEO of Spore, Inc. and patent attorney. "This traditional approach
can lead to potential gaps in patent coverage -- between commercial products
released and patent claims that are filed -- with the company assuming the new
products are well protected."
It took Spore less than two weeks to outline the core of the inventions
and generate Patent Matrix Diagrams for each application; Smartvue's outside
patent counsel then used these diagrams to draft and file the 12 applications
in time for the new product release, providing clear, concise communication
between the company and its attorneys. The Patent Matrix software provides
diagrams with outputs in .html format, ensuring inventors, business decision-
makers, and their attorneys are literally on the same page before starting
patent drafts. This streamlines the invention disclosure and patent drafting
process for everyone involved -- providing fewer edits in revisions and better
business certainty in the outputs.
