Biogen Names Craig Eric Schneier, Ph.D. as Executive Vice President, Human Resources

Biogen, Inc. (Nasdaq: BGEN), announced today that Craig Eric Schneier, Ph.D.
has been appointed Executive Vice President, Human Resources.

    Dr. Schneier will oversee the company's global human resource activities.
He reports to James C. Mullen, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.  Dr.
Schneier replaces Frank A. Burke, Jr., who recently retired after 16 years
with Biogen.
    Mr. Mullen said, "Craig Schneier has played an important role in shaping
Biogen's strategic development over the last several years and I am delighted
he will be leading our human resources efforts for our 2,700 employees
worldwide.  His experience at Biogen and expertise in strategy execution and
leadership development will be instrumental as we become a multi-product
biotechnology company, and continue to experience organizational growth around
the world."
    Dr. Schneier joined Biogen in 2001 as Senior Vice President, Strategic
Organization Design and Effectiveness, after having served as an external
consultant to the company for eight years.  In this capacity, Dr. Schneier was
responsible for strategic, organization-level capability assessment and
development, performance metrics and business process design.
    Prior to joining Biogen, Dr. Schneier was president of his own management
consulting firm in Princeton, New Jersey, where he provided consulting
services to more than 70 of the Fortune 100 companies, as well as several of
the largest European and Asian firms.  He also led consulting efforts at
Organizational Dynamics in Boston, and was managing partner at Sibson &
Company, a consulting firm in Princeton.
    Dr. Schneier held a tenured professorship at the University of Maryland's
Smith School of Business and has held teaching positions at the business
schools of the University of Michigan and Columbia University.  He currently
teaches at the Tuck School of Business, Dartmouth College.  He received his
B.A. and B.S. from Ohio State University and his Ph.D. and MBA from the
University of Colorado.
