New U.S. Encryption Export Policy Eliminates Barriers to RSA Security Serving
Broad International Markets With Full-Strength Cryptography and Products
BEDFORD, Mass., Jan. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- RSA Security Inc. (Nasdaq: RSAS)
today expressed its support for the administration's liberalization of
encryption export controls, announced today in Washington, DC. The new
regulations will remove most export restrictions on products containing strong
encryption technology and opens the door for RSA Security to aggressively
pursue international customers for its RSA BSAFE(R) cryptographic tools and
software.
The new regulations eliminate the need for RSA Security's OEM and
application developer customers to obtain a license to export products
containing RSA BSAFE strong encryption components to virtually any commercial
entity abroad, including telecommunications operators, ISPs, e-tailers,
airlines, banks and hospitals, among others. Further, the new policy allows
applications developed outside the U.S. using RSA BSAFE strong encryption to
be re-exported to most other countries without prior review. The new policy
also removes most restrictions on exporting retail products with strong
encryption, which includes web browsers, secure e-mail and other products
intended for individual use, further stimulating e-commerce development
outside the US.
"This groundbreaking policy improvement puts RSA Security on a level
playing field globally," said Chuck Stuckey, chairman of RSA Security. "The
growth of e-business is eliminating borders around the world and these new
regulations recognize that U.S. companies need strong security to deliver
competitive products and services in this emerging global market. The new
regulations are a good example of how government and industry can work
together to resolve tough issues for the benefit of the entire country.
"We appreciate the efforts of RSA Security and all the other organizations
and industry experts we have worked with to help us craft and fine tune these
new regulations," said Under Secretary William A. Reinsch, Bureau of Export
Administration, U.S. Department of Commerce. "We are looking forward to the
opportunity to expand on the specifics of the new regulations and answer
questions about them at the RSA Conference 2000 next week."
Under Secretary Reinsch is scheduled to take part in a Washington Update
Panel beginning at 8:00 a.m. PST on Monday, January 17, 2000 during RSA
Security's annual conference, RSA Conference 2000, to be held in San Jose,
Calif. Moderated by Jim Bidzos, RSA Security vice chairman, other panelists
will include representatives Bob Goodlatte, (R-6th) VA and Zoe Lofgren
(D-16th) CA; and Ron Lee, Assistant to the Attorney General of the U.S.
