Smith & Nephew Endoscopy Introduces World's First All-In-One, Mobile Endoscopic Visualization System

Dyonics(R) Vision 111 Portable Endoscopy System Reduces
                          Up-front Acquisition Costs

ANDOVER, Mass., Jan. 17 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Smith & Nephew, Inc.,
Endoscopy Division, a subsidiary of Smith & Nephew plc (NYSE: SNN)
(London Stock Exchange: SN), today announced the introduction of the
Dyonics(R)Vision 111 Portable Endoscopy System, the world's first mobile,
integrated endoscopic visualization system consisting of a high-quality
camera, state-of-the-art, high-efficiency light source and liquid-crystal
display (LCD) flat-panel monitor.
The new system combines proprietary, cutting-edge imaging and display
technology with portability to provide the medical community with an all-in-
one endoscopic visualization solution.
"We're committed to developing best-in-class visualization systems for
surgeons, whether they practice in a hospital, surgery center or office-based
setting," said Ron Sparks, president, Smith & Nephew Inc., Endoscopy Division.
"The proprietary technology platform used in the Dyonics Vision 111 Portable
Endoscopy System was designed to harness the technical advances and leverage
the cost-performance advantages of consumer electronics for use in the world
of endoscopy."
For example, LCD monitors have been replacing traditional CRT (Cathode Ray
Tube) monitors for some time in mainstream consumer electronics. This space-
saving and energy-saving technology feature can now provide immediate benefits
to any medical institution.
According to a Frost & Sullivan, 2001 Market Visualization Report, the
compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for revenues generated by the U.S.
endoscopic visualization equipment market from 2000 through 2007 is forecasted
to be 5.6 percent. The report also indicates that the significant revenue
growth during the middle portion of the forecast period is expected to be
attributable to the adoption of new technologies such as digital image
documentation and increased usage of flat-panel displays in the endoscopic OR.
"The Dyonics Vision 111 Portable Endoscopy System is an exceptional
visualization solution for hospitals and other medical institutions,
especially outpatient surgical centers and office-based practices which are
typically hampered by the size and cost of traditional visualization
equipment," commented Dr. James C. Esch, San Diego Shoulder Arthroscopy, Inc.
The Dyonics Vision 111 Portable Camera System is available in both NTSC
and PAL formats.
