By combining VeriSign's strengths in Internet authentication, validation
and payment services with InfoSpace.com's state-of-the art capabilities in
delivering commerce, content and promotions technologies over wireless
networks, the two companies will develop and offer a broader range of services
tailored to merchants, e-commerce service providers, portals and network
operators. These new services will enable enhanced trust and security for
applications being delivered over wireless networks including: secure
registration and end-user authentication for targeted promotions on mobile
devices and one-click buying and bidding; authenticated access to financial
information; and secure, verifiable transactions such as checking bank
balances and trading stock.
InfoSpace.com is committed to supporting a dynamic global market for
secure wireless commerce. As part of that commitment, InfoSpace.com will
partner with VeriSign to provide the first wireless Public Key Infrastructure
(PKI) and encryption solutions for secure transactions over wireless networks.
Through InfoSpace.com's established relationships with the regional bell
operating companies (RBOCs), a distribution network of over 2,100 Web sites,
and its pending acquisitions of leading providers such as Prio, Saraide and
PrivacyBank, the company is bridging the gap between the online, offline and
wireless worlds. Together with Saraide, InfoSpace.com provides commerce and
other services to worldwide carriers including British Telecom Cellnet,
Dutchtone, Panafon, J-Phone, KPN, Omnitel, diAx, Telfort, Libertel, Ben and
North American carriers including AT&T, Sprint, BellSouth, AirTouch, and
Microcell Telecommunications.
As part of the arrangement, InfoSpace.com and VeriSign plan to integrate
each other's services into their own, delivering a joint platform that will be
offered to the large number of merchants, portals and telecommunications
companies that currently license and distribute their services.
"By combining InfoSpace.com's leading commerce and information services
with our ability to enable authentication, real-time validation and secure
payments, we can deliver even more value-added services for a broad range of
businesses and users on wireless devices and across the Internet," said
Stratton Sclavos, president and CEO, VeriSign.
"We have been aggressively moving towards the delivery of advanced
commerce services over wireless devices with the recent announcements of our
one-click buying, promotions and transaction services on wireless devices,"
said Naveen Jain, chairman and CEO, InfoSpace.com. "By partnering with the
leader in Internet trust services to define a new standard of security for
wireless networks, we will be able to offer the most secure commerce services
in the market."
VeriSign and InfoSpace.com will be demonstrating best-in-class wireless
security services at the RSA Conference 2000 being held this week in San Jose,
CA. The demonstration will show how a customer will use a mobile handset to
securely access bank account information, benefiting end users, financial
institutions, wireless carriers and device manufacturers engaged in secure and
trusted e-commerce.
