ActivCard ActivPack(TM) Streamlines Network Access
FREMONT, Calif., Jan. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Providing flexible security
management to Novell network administrators, ActivCard, S.A. (Easdaq: ACTV),
today announced ActivPack(TM) for Novell Directory Services* (NDS*), which
delivers an integrated digital identity and card management solution for a
Novell environment. ActivPack is fully integrated into the Novell Certificate
Server and the new Novell Modular Authentication Service (NMAS), which offers
flexibility and advanced security by allowing users to authenticate using
multiple and different NDS authentication methods.

Manageable Security
Novell administrators can leverage the management capabilities of NDS and
ConsoleOne -- the Java-based Novell administration console -- for security
management with ActivPack, enabling administrators to streamline user access
controls and update them as appropriate at the server. This reduces the total
cost of ownership by leveraging the existing and already familiar user
identity management system. Additionally, users are offered an interface as
easy to use as an ATM, insert card, enter PIN. The user is then transparently
authenticated using the PKI credentials on the card and is granted access and
authorization based on policies set up in the directory.
User-transparent Security
ActivCard places user credentials on a smart card and not the PC hard
drive so users need only remember one PIN to access the network. Private key,
digital certificates or one-time use passwords are used to authenticate the
user to the network, whether through local network access, dial up or the Web.
These multi-application cards can also be used to login to Novell services and
access other applications, such as Entrust, Baltimore or Microsoft Windows NT
domain.
