SAF Module for Novell Modular Authentication Service (NMAS) Is Included In
Novell's NMAS Release Package As A Standard
Multi-Biometric Authentication Method
TAMPA, Fla., Jan. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- SAFLINK Corporation (Nasdaq: ESAF)
announced today the release and availability of their qualified SAF software
module for Novell's new authentication security product, Novell Modular
Authentication Service(TM) (NMAS)(TM). The SAF Module for NMAS provides a
secure, multi-biometric method for authenticating users to Novell Directory
Service(R) (NDS)(R), and components of the SAF module will be included as
standard features in both the NMAS Starter Pack, available now, and the
Enterprise Edition, expected to be available in March. SAFLINK and Novell
will be demonstrating the new software this week at the RSA Conference in San
Jose.
Novell NMAS is a unique security framework that allows users to log-on to
NDS using a variety of qualified authentication methods, including biometrics,
smart cards, tokens, and passwords. It significantly improves enterprise
security by providing network administrators with the flexibility to set
authentication requirements based on both user level and application or data
security requirements.
With NMAS multi-factor user authentication, security administrators can
require a combination of authentication methods, such as biometrics and a
smart card, before granting access to NDS. Graded authentication enables
security administrators to establish grades for the various authentication
methods installed in their system, then tailor log-on requirements to the
sensitivity of the data or application. For example, a user may be required
to complete only one authentication method, such as a biometric, for access to
an email application, but may need to complete a sequence of methods, such as
a combination of biometrics, password and token, for access to highly secure
data.
SAFLINK's SAF Module for NMAS provides a biometric authentication method
that complies with the Human Authentication Application Programming Interface
(HA-API), a biometric industry standard. Applications developed to the HA-API
standard can work with a variety of biometric technologies. The initial
release of the SAF Module for NMAS will support a choice of fingerprint
imaging, voice authentication, or facial recognition as qualified methods for
NMAS. Additional biometric technologies are planned for availability later
this quarter.
Server and license management components of the SAF module are packaged by
Novell and include five free user licenses for evaluation by potential
customers. To activate the free licenses, NMAS users simply need to download
the appropriate Biometric Service Provider (BSP) module from the SAFLINK web
site (http://www.saflink.com) and, if necessary, install the complementary hardware.
"Novell approached us while NMAS was still in development and invited us
to work with them to incorporate SAFLINK's biometric solutions capabilities
into NMAS," said Walter Hamilton, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for
SAFLINK Corporation. "As an enterprise security solutions company, we
immediately recognized the potential of NMAS to significantly improve the
security of a complex network, and as a powerful mechanism for protecting
sensitive customer information, such as financial account balances or medical
records. With the SAF module, users can easily implement biometric
authentication, the only authentication method that provides true positive ID,
within the NMAS framework."
"We were very pleased to work with SAFLINK on this new security product,"
said Patrick Harr, director of product management, Novell Inc., "As a leader
in the development of multi-biometric authentication products, SAFLINK brings
both biometric security expertise and a reputation for producing quality
products to the NMAS solution. Novell looks forward to continuing our
partnership with SAFLINK to provide solutions for NDS-enabled enterprises that
need the strongest levels of security and authentication."
