After Successful Partnership with General Motors, Serial Entrepreneur
Kimmel Returns to Venture Capital to Find Next Big Idea
PALO ALTO, Calif., and WALTHAM, Mass., Jan. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Advanced
Technology Ventures, a bi-coastal venture capital firm that invests in
information technology, healthcare and cleantech companies, today announced
that Todd Kimmel will return to the firm's Palo Alto office as a Principal
focused on cleantech investments.
"Todd has a proven track record of identifying disruptive technologies
as a venture capitalist and building companies as an entrepreneur," said
Bill Wiberg, General Partner, Advanced Technology Ventures.
Todd originally joined ATV in 2003 and sourced the firm's first
cleantech investments in Great Point Energy, CaliSolar and Sub-One
Technology. In 2006, Todd became an Entrepreneur-in-Residence (EIR) at ATV
and co-founded Coskata, the next-generation ethanol company that came out
of stealth mode by announcing its partnership with General Motors at the
2008 International Auto Show in Detroit earlier this week. Coskata is
commercializing an innovative process technology that leverages
gasification and bio-fermentation to produce ethanol for sub-$1.00 a gallon
from almost any raw material, anywhere in the world.
Since Coskata's inception, Todd has been active in all phases of the
company's development and growth. Upon the identification of the
micro-organisms for the conversion of synthesis gas to ethanol at Oklahoma
State University and the University of Oklahoma by Aaron Mandell and Andrew
Perlman from GreatPoint Ventures, Todd began collaborating with Aaron and
Andrew on the critical licensing discussions with the collective
universities, and orchestrating the company's funding. He also assembled
the Coskata management team, advised the company on general corporate
strategy, laid the foundation for important business development
relationships across the ethanol value chain, and managed day-to-day
operations.
As a Principal at ATV, Todd will remain as an active advisor to Coskata
while scouring Silicon Valley and beyond for the next big innovation in
cleantech.
"I'm energized from the Coskata launch and excited to return to ATV,"
said Todd Kimmel. "Creating companies is something I am passionate about
and enjoy and I'm eager to find the next disruptive technology and support
teams tackling new challenges across the cleantech landscape, especially,
next-generation composite and building materials, bio-plastics and energy
efficiency technologies."
Before joining ATV, Todd was the founder and Senior Vice President of
Business Development for Innovance, a Canadian-based developer of optical
networking solutions for service providers. Previously, he worked with
Wasserstein Perella & Co., Inc. in New York as a Financial Analyst for the
Investment Banking and Merchant Banking divisions. Todd holds a B.A. from
Amherst College.
