High Speed, Small Footprint, Low Battery Consumption are Key Features
BOSTON, Jan. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- NTRU Cryptosystems, Inc. today announced
the development of F@stWTLS(TM), a fast, low-footprint wireless data security
solution for the Wireless Access Protocol (WAP). F@stWTLS is an
implementation of the WAP Wireless Transport Layer Security (WTLS) protocol
using NTRU's patent-pending public key cryptography system. NTRU operates
over 100 times faster than competitors such as RSA and Certicom's Elliptic
Curve Cryptosystem at equivalent security levels.

"Wireless data applications require fast, cost-effective security," said
Scott Crenshaw, NTRU Vice President of Business Development. "F@stWTLS
operates dramatically faster than competitors, improving response times,
reducing gateway loading and increasing security by allowing more
communications to be encrypted at a higher security level than before."
"F@stWTLS reduces device cost and increases battery life," said Jim
Kotanchik, NTRU Vice President of Engineering. "By utilizing fewer gates and
fewer processor cycles, NTRU delivers high security at a lower cost. We
believe these benefits are compelling to everyone in the wireless data market,
from manufacturers to network operators and consumers."
Key benefits of F@stWTLS include:
Fast performance
Small memory footprint
Low cost to implement in hardware
Increased gateway performance (supports more users with fewer servers)
Lower battery consumption
NTRU is the most computationally efficient secure public key cryptography
system available. NTRU delivers performance 100 times faster than competitors,
even on inexpensive embedded microprocessors. It has a very small memory
footprint, and if implemented in silicon has the smallest gate count in the
industry. The computational efficiency also results in very low battery
consumption, a key point for wireless devices.
Disposable Keys
NTRU's fast operation enables the new security paradigm known as
"disposable keys." With NTRU, every wireless transaction can be encrypted
using a different, unrelated public key. Breaking one transaction yields no
benefits to help break another. Competing cryptography systems use the same
key for many transactions, often retaining the key for months at a time. Some
devices have only one key, which is used for the life of the device. By
breaking that one key, a hacker gains access to the contents of perhaps
hundreds or thousands of transactions. NTRU eliminates this risk by enabling
disposable keys.
F@stWTLS is currently under development, with release expected in early
2000. Interested launch customers are invited to contact NTRU immediately.
