FiberCore Announces North American Contracts Worth $67 Million

    CHARLTON, Mass., Jan. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- FiberCore, Inc. (Nasdaq: FBCE), a
leading manufacturer and global supplier of optical fiber and preform for the
telecommunication and data communications markets, today announced that it
received orders from North American customers valued at approximately
$67 million, most of which is under a "take or pay" arrangement.
    In addition to FiberCore's standard multimode and single-mode fiber, the
orders include the Company's recently introduced ValuGrade(R) single-mode
fiber, which will be used for premises (intra-building) and Fiber-to-the Curb
applications.  Additionally, the Company will supply special Radiation
Hardened fiber for government and military applications.  These orders are
scheduled to be shipped throughout 2001 to 2003 from the Company's German and
Brazilian production facilities and have been added to backlog, which at
December 31, 2000 was a record $190 million.
    Commenting on the contracts, Bob Sebesto, Vice President of Global Sales
and Marketing said, "FiberCore is one of the few, if not the only manufacturer
of specialty fibers such as Radiation Hardened as well as fibers with special
coatings for military applications.  These products were developed several
years ago after a number of competitors discontinued manufacturing these
special fibers.  Since then, FiberCore has been qualified on a number of key
U.S. and international programs, which are beginning to ramp up."
    Adding to its breadth of specialty fibers, the Company recently announced
the introduction of its new GigaGrade multimode fibers.  This product is
optimized to provide long link lengths at Gigabit speeds in laser-based
systems, and to guarantee high bandwidths when used with LED's (using
overfilled launch).
    FiberCore, Inc. develops, manufactures and markets single-mode and
multimode optical fiber preforms and optical fiber for the telecommunications
