EVEREN Capital Corporation Names Arthur J. McGivern New Chief Financial Officer

    CHICAGO, Jan. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Arthur J. McGivern today was named chief
financial officer of EVEREN Capital Corporation (NYSE: EVR) and a member of
EVEREN's Operating Committee.  McGivern succeeds Daniel D. Williams, who will
retire.  Currently serving as senior executive vice president and director of
corporate development, McGivern will begin his new assignment effective Feb.
1, 1999.  He will report to EVEREN Chairman and Chief Executive Officer James
R. Boris.
    In making today's announcement, Boris said, "Art's demonstrated
combination of financial and analytical expertise makes him uniquely qualified
to lead our financial team as EVEREN progresses to the next level of its
development.  He will bring to his new role the strategic focus he has
demonstrated over many years with our firm, first as general counsel and then
as head of corporate development."
    Commenting on Williams' retirement, Boris said, "Dan Williams made many
valuable contributions to EVEREN's growth during his 17 years with the
company.  He leaves EVEREN with a strong financial base and well positioned
for the future.  I thank him and wish him well."
    McGivern rejoined EVEREN in 1996 from Kemper Corporation, where he had
been senior vice president and corporate counsel since 1994.  He first joined
EVEREN, then known as Kemper Securities, in 1991 as executive vice president,
general counsel and secretary.  He was promoted to senior executive vice
president in 1992 and continued as general counsel until EVEREN's spin off
from Kemper Corporation in 1995.
    From 1986 through 1990, McGivern was vice president, associate general
counsel and secretary of Beatrice Company.  Previously, McGivern was a partner
at Chicago-based law firm Vedder, Price, Kaufman & Kammholz.  He began his
career at Price Waterhouse & Company as a certified public accountant.
    McGivern earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from Xavier University
in Cincinnati, Ohio and a law degree from Northwestern University.
