PITTSBURGH, Jan. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- As the first month of winter in
Pittsburgh ends, the weather continues to bring snowy forecasts and bitter
cold temperatures. PENNDOT's Pittsburgh District zeros in on making winter
drives safer on state highways in Allegheny County.
PENNDOT crews work around the clock to serve and protect our customers.
"If the forecast predicts a bad storm, we will call shifts in early to provide
24-hour coverage," said Andy Kost, Assistant District Engineer of Maintenance.
Kost emphasizes the importance of a 24-hour service with minor crews.
"They're there to hit any problem areas. They're always on demand to treat
any emergencies," Kost said.
Snow-covered roadways can contribute to many minor traffic accidents, but
after a few mild winters, this winter PENNDOT has been working hard to make
roads drivable. In the last 30 days, PENNDOT has used over 25,000 tons of
rock salt, 23,000 gallons of magnesium-chloride, and 8,000 tons of salt grind.
For motorist convenience, pictures of roadway conditions are available on
PENNDOT's web cameras via http://www.epenndot.com and from local weather websites.
Motorists are encouraged to stay alert while sharing the road with one of
PENNDOT's 60 salt and plow trucks during the winter months.
