'To Stay Alive We Need Levee 5' - Blue Dog Goes to Washington!

United Way Supports Artful Endeavor to Raise National Awareness

NEW ORLEANS, Jan. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- United Way for the Greater New
Orleans Area applauds Cajun Artist George Rodrigue, of Rodrigue Studio, for
his attention-getting national art campaign "To Stay Alive We Need Levee 5,"
featuring his famous Blue Dog.

The decimation of the Gulf Coast by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita inspired
Rodrigue to create the campaign which highlights the importance of correcting
the massive problems caused by inefficient levee systems in the Greater New
Orleans Area.
A copy of the promotional print "To Stay Alive We Need Levee 5" will be
sent to every member of Congress to ensure that the art campaign's message of
levee repair to withstand a Category 5 hurricane is considered a priority.
"Louisiana must remain focused with one voice, expressing our opinion on a
national level with a rallying cry and a strong campaign. Yes, we who have
lived in New Orleans want to return and rebuild. But we need a levee to
protect our city -- its people, its buildings, and its culture," stated
Rodrigue. "We need specific and ongoing action towards rebuilding our wetlands
and saving our marshes. The people of Louisiana must keep pressure on our
elected officials -- local, state, and national. It's time they get on the
same page and begin immediately to build this protection, no matter how long
it may take."
According to United Way Director of Government Relations Charmaine
Caccioppi, "Using Rodrigue's talents to promote a national campaign will
guarantee the momentum necessary at the federal level to get the funding
needed for a Category 5 water management project."
"Rodrigue and United Way believe that government, businesses and
individuals working together to complete such a project, will ensure that our
communities can again be safe, vital places to live, work and raise our
families," concluded United Way for the Greater New Orleans Area President
Gary Ostroske.
