American Heart Association's Women's Heart Health Education Program
LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., Jan. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Astoria Federal Savings today
announced it is launching its second year of major support for the American
Heart Association's women's health awareness education program, Go Red for
Women, by pledging $25,000 in the form of a matching challenge grant and a
sponsorship of its annual Long Island luncheon.
Astoria Federal has also created special Go Red Tribute cards for the
public to give to family, friends and co-workers to remind them about the
importance of heart health and share in honor of loved ones.
"Our major support for this important community health awareness campaign
launches on National Wear Red Day February 3, 2006, and will take place in all
of the communities served by Astoria Federal throughout Nassau, Suffolk,
Brooklyn, Queens, and Westchester," Astoria Federal Savings Senior Vice
President and Director of Marketing Brian Edwards said.
"Every Astoria Federal employee and customer is encouraged to wear red on
February 3, 2006, to kick-off the month-long campaign," Edwards said.
"National Wear Red Day gives everyone the opportunity to unite in this life-
saving awareness movement by showing off a favorite red dress, shirt, tie, Red
Dress Pin or hat."
New Go Red Honor Cards
"We've introduced a new Go Red Honor Card, so that when a donation is made
to the American Heart Association at any Astoria Federal branch, the donor
will receive a special card they can give to the person of their choice. It's
a nice way to honor someone," he added. "Plus, Astoria Federal is matching all
donations dollar-for-dollar up to a total of $25,000." Special red dress lapel
pins will also be available at Astoria Federal branches for those donors who
wish to show their ongoing public support for the educational campaign
throughout the year.
"Every minute in America, a wife, mother, sister, daughter, or best friend
dies from a heart attack or stroke. That's 1 in 2.4 women or more than one
half million women a year who are lost to cardiovascular disease. It's a very
shocking statistic to hear. You'd be even more surprised to know it exceeds
the next seven causes of death in women, including breast cancer, and all
deaths in men, combined," Edwards said. "That's why Astoria Federal Savings is
Going Red for Women for the second year in a row. We want to continue to help
women put themselves first by again raising awareness about the importance of
investing in their heart health."
Alice K. Jacobs, M.D., FAHA, President, American Heart Association said,
"Astoria Federal and companies across the nation are really putting their
passion into action by participating in the Go Red for Women campaign. Their
generosity is helping to heighten awareness and bring about positive change to
defeat this major health threat."
"We are committed to supporting organizations and programs that help
educate, inform and support the many communities we serve. Heart disease
affects so many. Heart health education, just like financial education, is an
invaluable lesson to teach," Edwards concluded. For the second year in a row,
Astoria Federal will also be the major sponsor of the American Heart
Association's Long Island Region Annual Go Red for Women Luncheon February 8,
2006. The event is attended by over 700 people at the Crest Hollow Country
Club in Woodbury.
Wear Red Day is also supported by the U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services Office on Women's Health, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood
Institute and WomenHeart: the National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease.
