TOLEDO, OH UNITED STATES
TOLEDO, Ohio, Jan. 23 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Dana Corporation
announced today that it has begun supplying Spicer(R) drivetrain products -
including front and rear propshafts and front suspension modules - to
Chrysler Group for the 2007 Dodge Nitro.

"Dana is pleased to provide these core technologies for such an
exciting vehicle - the all-new 2007 Dodge Nitro," said Michael J. Burns,
Dana chairman and CEO. "Through this modules program, we are able to
increase customer throughput and reduce part complexity."
Dana's Spicer(R) Life Series(R) front and rear propshafts reduce noise,
vibration, and harshness and help to improve crash performance. The steel
front propshaft utilizes magnetic-arc welding and staked-and-centered
cardan universal joints. The friction-welded aluminum rear propshaft
features a splined-tube design and includes staked-and-centered cardan
universal joints at both ends.
The welding technologies ensure precise component orientation,
substantially improving initial propshaft balance characteristics. Staked-
and-centered universal joints eliminate unwanted looseness and provide a
smoother, high-speed dynamic performance.
The launch of Spicer Life Series propshafts in an automotive platform
represents a global extension of this product line from Dana's commercial-
vehicle product offering. Within the next year, Dana plans to offer Spicer
Life Series propshafts to four automotive customers in six countries
(Australia, Mexico, Spain, Thailand, United Kingdom, and the United States)
on four continents.
The front suspension modules feature Dana's Spicer(R) axle technology
and will be assembled at Dana's Toledo, Ohio, facility.
The front modules for the 2007 Dodge Nitro are assembled in various
configurations - two-wheel or all-wheel drive, gasoline or diesel - and are
line-sequenced, along with dressed rear axles and Dana's front and rear
propshafts, for just-in-time delivery. Chrysler Group receives one part
number representing components from 19 suppliers.
The modules are assembled within a one-minute cycle time to meet the
just- in-time delivery requirements based on schedules that are
communicated to Dana's Lean ERP system from the Chrysler Group plant just
one mile away.
In addition to these drivetrain products, Dana also supplies exhaust-
manifold gaskets, bushings, and washers for the standard 4.0-liter engine
and cylinder-head cover assemblies and top and second compression rings for
the 2007 Dodge Nitro's optional 3.7-liter engine.
