MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Jan. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Aviron (Nasdaq: AVIR) today
announced the promotion of Rayasam S. Prasad to senior vice president,
technical affairs.
Mr. Prasad joined Aviron in September 1999 as vice president, technical
affairs responsible for Aviron's quality assurance, quality control and
regulatory functions. He has managed the development of these functions at
Aviron's facilities in California, Pennsylvania and the United Kingdom.
Mr. Prasad joined Aviron from Chiron Vaccines, the global vaccines
business unit of Chiron Corporation, where he served as a head of regulatory,
quality and drug safety assessment of 30 marketed vaccines in more than
70 countries.
"Over the past year, Ray has built an organization that played a pivotal
role in the preparation, submission and acceptance for review of our
FluMist(TM) Biologics License Application. We look for his continued
leadership as the company moves toward commercialization," said
C. Boyd Clarke, Aviron chairman and chief executive officer.
On October 31, 2000, Aviron submitted a Biologics License Application to
the U.S. Food and Drug Administration seeking licensure of FluMist(TM) to
prevent influenza in healthy children and healthy adults. FluMist(TM) is
Aviron's investigational intranasal influenza vaccine.
Aviron is a biopharmaceutical company based in Mountain View, California,
focused on the prevention of disease through innovative vaccine technology.
Actual results may differ materially from the forward-looking statements
contained in this release. Factors that could cause actual results to differ
include, but are not limited to, the assessment by regulatory agencies that
the company's license applications for its nasal influenza vaccine are
incomplete or inadequate to approve the product for marketing to one or more
target populations. Additional information concerning factors
that could cause such a difference is contained in Aviron's SEC filings,
including its Registration Statements on Form S-3 and Annual Report on Form
10-K for the year ended December 31, 1999.
