LOS ANGELES, Jan. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Experts in areas as diverse as
open-source software, germline therapy, e-commerce, the new ecology, charter
schools, and art will examine the processes of innovation, competition, and
open-ended evolution at the first-of-its-kind Dynamic Visions Conference in
Santa Clara, CA on President's Day Weekend, 1999.
"A new vision is transforming how we understand nature and culture, law
and custom, politics and economics, art and technology," says Virginia
Postrel, the conference founder and author of "The Future and Its Enemies"
(Free Press, 1998). "This conference offers a unique opportunity for scholars
and practitioners in a wide range of fields to explore their common
experiences with innovation, and cast new light on how progress really
occurs."
The conference format is designed to allow extensive discussion and
networking, with 17 formal presentations by innovators and leading thinkers
including Richard Epstein of the University of Chicago School of Law, Mike
Godwin of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Washington Post Columnist James
K. Glassman, Christine Peterson of the Foresight Institute, Gregory Stock of
the UCLA School of Medicine, and many others.
A sampling of the presentation topics includes: Internet Policy and the
Boundary between Chaos and Order; The Importance of Economic Experiments; The
Political Economy of Innovation; Humans: Objects of Conscious Design;
Bypassing Bureaucracy: Dynamic Approaches to Education Reform; Creativity as a
Process; Is Culture a Condition or a Process?; Software Beyond Scarcity,
Simple Rules for a Complex World; and many more.
"The dynamic process that drives innovation is similar in all lines of
work and every aspect of life," says Postrel who is also editor of Reason
magazine. "By understanding how it works across such a broad spectrum of
subject areas, people can learn a tremendous amount about how to create and
compete in their own lives, and better understand the obstacles that stand in
the way of progress. That's what this conference is all about."
The conference includes a private dinner reception at the new Tech Museum
of Innovation in San Jose. The complete program is available at
