Sun to Integrate Leading iPlanet(TM) E-Commerce Directory With Solaris(TM) 8 Operating Environment

    MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Jan. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- iPlanet(TM) E-Commerce
Solutions, a Sun-Netscape Alliance, today announced that Sun Microsystems has
selected iPlanet Directory Server software, the world's most widely deployed
e-commerce directory, to be integrated as a core component of the Solaris(TM)
8 operating environment.
With more than 150 million licenses sold worldwide and nearly 70 percent
of the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) market (IDC, 1999)*, the
iPlanet Directory Server offers e-commerce customers one of the industry's
most mature extranet directories available. The product has been proven to
handle the scalability and performance requirements of leading e-commerce
powerhouses such as FedEx, First Union, France Telecom, Cutler Hammer and many
others. iPlanet Directory Server software enables companies to manage user
names, passwords, access control and security authorization for their
customers, suppliers, partners and employees.
"The integration with Solaris establishes iPlanet Directory Server as the
core directory management engine for Solaris and creates many new
opportunities for the iPlanet directory business," said Mark Tolliver,
president of iPlanet. "By seeding the market with the world's leading LDAP
directory, we can help drive the growth of our directory-enabled e-commerce
applications and establish new up-sell opportunities along the way."
"Directory services are a key part of the computing solution for
internet-enabled applications," said Anil Gadre, vice president and general
manager, Solaris Software, Sun Microsystems. "Not only does it allow
management of user information for large e-commerce applications, it also is a
key repository for critical system management information to allow for better
management of the datacenter."
The iPlanet Directory Server operates as a central repository of user data
controlling preferences, access rights, and security levels. Designed for
large e-commerce deployments, the directory was recently tested by an
independent lab at speeds of more than 5,000 queries per second.**
The iPlanet Directory Server software will continue to be sold separately
by the iPlanet sales force and as part of the iPlanet Unified User Management
solution, which includes a complete public key infrastructure (PKI)-based
security platform, meta-directory, delegated administration and policy
management. By deploying the complete solution, customers can leverage a
common user management infrastructure, enabling rapid deployment of new web
services, differentiated levels of security, and reduced administrative costs
of managing user information in multiple directories.
Solaris 8 will ship with a 200,000 user license per server for the iPlanet
Directory Server software. Additional licenses are available directly from
iPlanet.
