PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The Pennsylvania Cancer Alliance
(PCA), a consortium of the Commonwealth's top cancer centers, will honor State
Senate Majority Leader David J. "Chip" Brightbill (R-48) tonight, during a
reception at 5:00 p.m. in the East Wing Rotunda of the State Capitol in
Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
Brightbill, the Senate Majority Leader since 2000, serves the people of
Lebanon County and areas of Berks, Chester, Dauphin, and Lancaster counties.
He was selected to receive the PCA's annual award in recognition of his strong
support of cancer research during his career.
Brightbill is most noted for his commitment to cancer research in the
Commonwealth following the tobacco Master Settlement Agreement of 1998, which
provided substantial funds to the 46 states participating in the agreement.
With his active support, Act 77 was signed into law in 2001 dedicating all of
the tobacco funds to medical research and other health-related programs.
In addition, Brightbill helped advance the Pennsylvania Breast and
Cervical Cancer Early Screening Act, which will go into effect after July 1,
2006. This act directs the Pennsylvania Department of Heath to provide annual
breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women 40 to 49.
Brightbill also is chairman of the Senate Rules and Executive Nominations
Committee. He graduated from Penn State University with a degree in economics
and graduated with honors from Duquesne University School of Law. He has
served as District Attorney of Lebanon County and as a member of the Lebanon
School Board.
The Pennsylvania Cancer Alliance is working together to fight cancer in
the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania by pursuing world-class basic and clinical
research to advance the standard of cancer care and improve cancer prevention
