Delivers Leading Internet Solutions for Red Hat Linux Platform
LINUXWORLD, NEW YORK, Feb. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- iPlanet(TM) E-Commerce
Solutions, a Sun-Netscape Alliance (Alliance), today announced the immediate
availability of iPlanet Messaging Server and iPlanet Web Server, Enterprise
Edition software, with support for Red Hat Linux. These latest additions
round out iPlanet's portfolio of products available on Linux, which already
includes iPlanet Directory Server and iPlanet Delegated Administrator
software. The scalability and low total cost of ownership of iPlanet server
products combined with the cost-efficient Linux operating system affords
customers a low barrier-to-entry for growing their Internet Service Provider
(ISP) businesses or rolling out Internet services to their internal enterprise
users.
Demonstrations of iPlanet directory, messaging and Web server products on
Red Hat Linux will be available at the Sun Microsystems booth, number 231, and
Red Hat booth, number 445, at LinuxWorld this week.
iPlanet server software for Red Hat Linux provides enterprise customers
and ISPs with the scalability and reliability of iPlanet server software and
the innovation and open standards support of Linux. iPlanet E-Commerce
Solutions has supported Linux since its inception and will continue to expand
on this commitment as market and customer demand for the operating system
continues to increase. According to market research firm International Data
Corp. (http://www.idc.com), Linux is the fastest growing operating system for
servers. IDC projects that commercial shipments of Linux will grow at a
compound annual rate of 25 percent from 1999 through 2003. IDC estimates that
all other server operating systems will grow at a rate of about 12 percent
during the same span. In the area of Web servers, the research firm says Linux
towers over all other products.
iPlanet Linux products offer a competitive advantage for customers
currently using open source freeware software. iPlanet's experience delivering
best-of-breed solutions provides customers with time-to-market advantages and
a cost-effective strategy for quickly deploying core Internet services. This
allows internal IT teams to better focus on developing value-added
applications rather than ongoing management and administration of baseline
services, like email, directory and Web.
"We are excited to work with independent software vendors, like iPlanet
E-Commerce Solutions, to provide industry enterprise-level Internet
infrastructure solutions for the growing community of Red Hat Linux users,"
said Paul McNamara, general manager of the enterprise business unit at Red
Hat. "The scalable, carrier-grade iPlanet directory, messaging and Web server
software naturally complements the Red Hat platform and offers customers
out-of-the-box solutions for deploying Internet services for their business."
"In the Net Economy, where time-to-market can make or break a company's
ability to compete effectively, it is imperative that companies have proven
solutions that will help them rapidly grow their business and drive revenues,"
said Dr. Stuart Wells, senior vice president of infrastructure products for
iPlanet E-Commerce Solutions. "Multi-platform support has always been a
distinguishing feature of all iPlanet products, which we continue to provide
as one of the first vendors to offer integrated Web, directory and messaging
server products for the Linux platform."
iPlanet Directory Server software
iPlanet Directory Server delivers a user-management infrastructure for
enterprises and ISPs that manage high volumes of user information. iPlanet
Directory Server integrates with existing systems and acts as a central
repository for the consolidation of employee, customer, supplier, and partner
information; flexible, personalized user profiles and preferences; and
extranet user authentications. In hosted environments, partners, customers,
and suppliers can manage portions of the directory themselves, reducing
internal administration costs and helping ensure accurate, up-to-date
information.
iPlanet Messaging Server
iPlanet Messaging Server is a carrier-grade, high-performance messaging
solution that delivers superior scalability, performance, and administration.
It enables enterprise service providers and Internet service providers to
provide universal access to business-grade messaging services for entire
communities of employees, partners, and customers. iPlanet Messaging Server
also provides a strategic platform for evolving services from Web-based
communities to calendaring, wireless, and unified messaging services. Built
with support for Web-based clients, the iPlanet Messaging Server can deliver
critical messaging services to both traditional desktop PCs and a variety of
wired and wireless devices including Web kiosks, thin clients, handheld PDAs,
and wireless phones.
iPlanet Web Server, Enterprise Edition software
Web servers are the central point through which all business-critical
content, applications, and transactions must flow before reaching users.
iPlanet Web Server, Enterprise Edition software, has the flexibility to help
an enterprise meet increasing customer demands, and delivers the high
performance, reliability, scalability, and manageability that an enterprise
needs to handle the massive volume demanded by successful Web sites in the Net
Economy. iPlanet Web Server, Enterprise Edition software supports a variety of
application extensions including Common Gateway Interface, Server-Side
JavaScript(TM), Java(TM) Servlets and JavaServer Pages(TM), and Netscape
