DALLAS, July 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Belo (NYSE: BLC) announced today that
Michael J. McCarthy will become senior executive vice president of the Company
and take an expanded role in Belo's corporate management and public policy
initiatives. McCarthy, 55, is currently executive vice president and a member
of Belo's six-member management committee.
McCarthy will continue to report to Robert W. Decherd, Belo's chairman,
president and chief executive officer, and oversee all of Belo's legal, human
resources, government relations and internal audit activities. McCarthy was
recently elected to the executive committee of the board of directors of the
National Association of Broadcasters and was appointed by the NAB board to
head a task force to facilitate the digital television transition in the
United States.
In making the announcement, Decherd said, "Mike McCarthy's broad, diverse
role at Belo encompasses a range of responsibilities where judgement, instinct
and experience are the determinants of success. Mike possesses all of these
qualities and is, in addition, a great mentor to many executives throughout
the Belo organization."
McCarthy joined Belo in October 1985 from the Washington law firm of Dow,
Lohnes & Albertson, where he specialized in FCC/media, general corporate and
regulatory/legislative work.
Prior to Dow, Lohnes & Albertson, McCarthy worked for the Executive Office
of the President of the United States as a speechwriter for Clay T. Whitehead,
an assistant to President Nixon. He began his career in 1968 as an
economist/speechwriter for members of Congress at the Congressional Research
Service in the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.. His career in legal
and government affairs spans 32 years.
McCarthy, a native of Iowa, graduated from Notre Dame University in 1966,
received his master's degree from the London School of Economics and earned a
J.D. degree with honors from George Washington University Law School.
McCarthy is also a published novelist.
McCarthy has a long history of involvement in charitable organizations,
including his service as a trustee of The Dallas Morning News Charities and
Catholic Charities of Dallas. He serves on the board of the Dallas Chamber of
Commerce and advisory boards for the National Center for State Courts in
Williamsburg, Virginia, and Bishop Lynch High School in Dallas.
