American Eagle Outfitters Reports January Same Store Sales Increase of 9.6%

    WARRENDALE, Pa., Feb. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- American Eagle Outfitters, Inc.
(Nasdaq: AEOS) today announced total sales for the four fiscal weeks ended
January 29, 2000 increased 29.1% to $41.8 million from $32.3 million for the
four week period ended January 30, 1999.  Comparable sales for the 1999 period
were up 9.6% compared to the corresponding four week period last year.
    Sales for the fifty-two weeks ended January 29, 2000 were $832.1 million
compared to the $587.6 million for the fifty-two week period last year, an
increase of 41.6%.  Comparable store sales for the fifty-two weeks ended
January 29, 2000 increased 20.9% compared to the corresponding fifty-two week
period ended January 30, 1999.
    George Kolber, Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer, noted that: "The
Company's strong comparable store sales were achieved despite severe weather
conditions and low levels of winter inventory.  We believe we are very well
positioned for strong sales in the first quarter."
    American Eagle Outfitters, Inc. is a specialty retailer of all-American,
