Scientific-Atlanta (NYSE: SFA) (S-A), a leading technology innovator for the
broadcast and broadband industries, has been selected to expand the cable
network of Ipko Net, a leading Internet Service Provider in Kosovo, to offer
new products and services to subscribers. Scientific-Atlanta technology will
enable Ipko Net to develop new networks to deliver new services for existing
commercial customers, penetrate Kosovo's currently untapped consumer market
and help with its long term goal of creating the country's first broadband
network. The project comes at the end of a year-long research project which
involved speaking with existing S-A customers who have deployed similar
systems in the past, as well as a trial of deploying a system in a block of
MDU's (multi-dwelling unit) in downtown Prishtina.
Ipko Net started offering Internet services in 1999 and today is the only
Internet provider to offer services through an independent network covering
over 70 percent of Kosovo's populated territory. It currently provides data
services for many business-to-business customers in industries such as
Insurance and Banking, Government, Customs and Tax administration, and has an
ambitious growth strategy to expand its network reach, bandwidth and portfolio
of services. This includes providing services to residential subscribers.
The initial project includes the purchase of cable modems, EMTAs (embedded
media terminal adapter) and amplifiers from S-A to help to enable the company
to provide faster connections for its existing customers. Additional
infrastructure will help Ipko Net to expand services into residential areas
and provide the first broadband Internet service in Kosovo.
