LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., Feb. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Astoria Federal Savings
announced today it will launch its major support for "Go Red for Women," the
American Heart Association's heart health awareness education program on
February 7, 2005. The community awareness campaign will take place in many
communities served by Astoria Federal throughout Nassau, Suffolk, Brooklyn,
Queens, and Westchester.
"Every minute in America, a wife, mother, sister, daughter, or best friend
dies from a heart attack or stroke. That's 1 in 2.4 women or more than one
half million women a year who are lost to cardiovascular disease," Astoria
Federal Savings Senior Vice President and Director of Marketing Brian Edwards
said. "It's a very shocking statistic to hear. You'd be even more surprised to
know it exceeds the next seven causes of death in women, including breast
cancer, and all deaths in men, combined."
"That's why Astoria Federal Savings is Going Red for Women this year.
We've decided to help women put themselves first by raising awareness about
the importance of investing in their heart health," Edwards added.
To start the campaign, Edwards said, every Astoria Federal branch will
accept donations on behalf of the American Heart Association to support
women's heart health awareness throughout the month of February. The branches
will hand out 'Go Red' dress pins to those supporting the cause to share with
family and friends. Astoria Federal will match every donation dollar-for-
dollar, up to $25,000, to help support the education campaign.
Edwards said there are several events coming up of interest to Astoria
Federal customers and the general public: On February 16, Astoria Federal
will host the American Heart Association Annual Luncheon at the Crest Hollow
Country Club for more than 500 participants. On February 24, Astoria Federal
and the American Heart Association will "Go Red" at KJOY's Ultimate Bridal
Showcase from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Carlyle on the Green in Bethpage. All
proceeds from the show's $10 admission fee will be donated to the "Go Red"
campaign.
During the months of February through April, Astoria Federal will
underwrite a series of free heart health lectures and events including:
* February 17, 2005: Mather Hospital's Heart Health Fair "Women and
Heart Disease ... How does My Heart Affect My Brain and What Does
Estrogen Have to Do with It?" 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., Mather Hospital,

"Astoria Federal and companies across the nation are really putting their
passion into action by participating in the Go Red for Women campaign. Their
generosity is helping to heighten awareness and bring about positive change to
defeat this major health threat."
"We are committed to supporting organizations and programs that help
educate, inform and support the many communities we serve throughout Nassau,
Suffolk, Brooklyn, Queens and Westchester. Heart disease affects so many.
Heart health education, just like financial education, is an invaluable
lesson to teach," Edwards concluded.
The health education public service program is also being supported by
WLIW Channel 21, Telicare, KJOY, B-103, Island 94.3, WHLI radio and PATV of
