Raytheon Systems Limited Wins New ATC Contract in China

MSSR system to be installed at Kunming

HARLOW, Essex, Feb. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Systems Limited (RSL) has
just secured a contract for its 22nd Monopulse Secondary Surveillance Radar
(MSSR) system for the People's Republic of China. This latest award is for a
standalone system to be installed at Kunming, in the southern province of
Yunnan.
The contract was signed with the Air Traffic Management Bureau (ATMB) of
the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC). The MSSR will be supplied
and supported by RSL's Harlow, UK, facility. This sale represents the
company's first success in the South Western ATMB region, which has its
headquarters in Chengdu, Sechuan province, and follows a recent contract for
four systems supplied for the Jing Hu Sui air corridor in the east of the
country.
The MSSR will be located on an elevated peak outside Kunming, some 2,500
metres above sea level. The city already has a Primary Surveillance Radar
(PSR) radar supplied by Raytheon Canada.
Mick Reeve, RSL's ATC business executive, said: "The People's Republic of
China is one of our most important export markets. We have developed a model
contract with the ATMB which reduces considerably the time taken in
negotiations, to the benefit of both parties."
MSSR systems provide long-range radar coverage to a range of 250 miles,
and are the principal sensors in civil air traffic control. The system
operates by interrogating a transponder unit on the aircraft, which responds
with the aircraft identity and flight level. These parameters are used to
provide a dynamic representation of air traffic activity on the controller's
screen. RSL's Harlow facility is recognised as a market leader in this
technology.
Raytheon has been very active in air traffic control in China since the
early 1990's and has supplied state-of-art secondary radars, primary radars
and air traffic control automation systems to numerous cities within the
country.
Raytheon's experience in international air traffic control is extensive,
ranging from individual airport installations to multiple-site turnkey
systems. In addition to China, Raytheon's state-of-the-art ATC systems have
been chosen by a large number of countries around the world including
Australia, Botswana, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Germany, India, Indonesia,
Jamaica, Lebanon, Mongolia, Netherlands, Norway, Oman, Switzerland, the UK and
the USA.
Raytheon Systems Limited is the UK-based subsidiary of Raytheon Company.
With around 1,700 employees throughout the country, RSL services both defence
and commercial markets. Raytheon is a major supplier to the UK Ministry of
Defence and has won programmes such as ASTOR (Airborne Stand-Off Radar) and

as a team player in bids for other programmes such as the Royal Navy's Future
Carrier (CVF), Co-operative Engagement Capability (UK CEC), Javelin and
Precision Guided Bomb. RSL also designs, develops and manufactures ATC radar,
identification systems and anti-jam navigation systems. It is a specialist
supplier of semiconductors and power modules, manufacturing complex electronic
systems, sub-systems and assemblies, and undertakes aircraft servicing and
