Raytheon Systems Limited Completes SIVAM Project

HARLOW, Essex, Feb. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Systems Limited (RSL) has
just delivered the last of 20 Monopulse Secondary Surveillance Radar (MSSR)
systems for the Brazilian SIVAM (System for the Vigilance of the Amazon)
programme. The four year order won by RSL was part of the wider SIVAM
contract between Raytheon Company and the Government of Brazil, which became
effective in 1997.
The MSSR's are among the key sensors in this $1.4 billion, five year
programme and are located across the 5.2 million sq. km. Amazon basin area.
RSL's contract called for delivery of seven dual-channel standalone MSSR
systems, seven dual-channel MSSRs co-mounted with fixed primary radars, and
six single channel MSSRs co-mounted with transportable primary radars, as well
as associated spares, training and manuals. RSL was also responsible for the
installation and commissioning of the first of each type of MSSR, a
challenging task given the difficult environment.
SIVAM is an ambitious programme conceived in the early 1990's to enable
the Brazilian Government to monitor the Amazon region and to utilise this
information in a wide variety of ways. Among its many uses, the SIVAM system
supports environmental protection, such as detecting and monitoring forest
fires and identification of illegal logging/forest destruction. SIVAM also
supports sustainable development within the region, including air traffic
control and airspace surveillance, and protection of indigenous populations.
SIVAM includes a wide range of ground, airborne, and satellite sensors,
weather stations, flight inspection aircraft, and navigation aids. Sensor
data is provided to an Air Surveillance Centre, three Regional Surveillance
Centres, and a General Co-ordination Centre, through a comprehensive
telecommunications infrastructure.
Raytheon Systems Limited is the UK-based subsidiary of Raytheon Company.
With around 1,700 employees throughout the country, RSL services both defence
and commercial markets. Raytheon is a major supplier to the UK Ministry of
Defence and has won programmes such as ASTOR (Airborne Stand-Off Radar) and
SIFF (Successor Identification Friend or Foe). The company also participates
as a team player in bids for other programmes such as the Royal Navy's Future
Carrier (CVF), Co-operative Engagement Capability (UK CEC), Javelin and
Precision Guided Bomb. RSL also designs, develops and manufactures ATC radar,
identification systems and anti-jam navigation systems. It is a specialist
supplier of semiconductors and power modules, manufacturing complex electronic
systems, sub-systems and assemblies, and undertakes aircraft servicing and
