LEXINGTON, MA USA
  eXtended Development Environment Simplifies and Accelerates Java/J2EE and
      Microsoft .NET Development; Result of Strategic Relationships with
                              IBM and Microsoft

    LEXINGTON, Mass., Feb. 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Rational Software
(Nasdaq: RATL) today announced Rational(R) XDE(TM) Professional v2002, the
first product to accelerate software development by eliminating the gap
between design and development in industry-leading Java(TM) and Microsoft(R)
Visual Studio(TM) .NET Integrated Development Environments (IDEs).
    Software developers are looking for a powerful development environment
that includes design capabilities, as well as seamless integration with the
tools they use to write code. Until now, IDEs and design tools have been
separate environments, and the requirement to switch between these
environments has hindered developers.
    Rational XDE Professional empowers developers to code and design directly
in their IDE -- Microsoft Visual Studio .NET or IBM WebSphere Studio
Application Developer -- without switching between different, loosely-
integrated tools. Rational XDE Professional also includes the IBM Eclipse
IDE, which provides a Java development environment to developers who are not
committed to a particular Java IDE.
    Rational XDE Professional is an eXtended Development Environment that
blends the capabilities of industry-leading IDEs from Microsoft and IBM with
Rational's industry-leading design and modeling technology, uniquely
customizable design patterns, and template-based code generation. Additional
press releases and product screenshots of Rational XDE Professional v2002 are
available at http://www.rational.com/news/xde/index.jsp.
    Rational's close collaboration with IBM and Microsoft in developing
Rational XDE Professional resulted in unprecedented support for the Java and
Microsoft .NET platforms. Gartner, a leading analyst firm, predicts that Java
and .NET architectures will account for eighty percent of new application
development projects by 2003.
    "We are very excited to work with Rational on Rational XDE Professional, a
new tool that complements the Visual Studio .NET environment both for the
individual developer, as well as large, distributed development teams," said
Tom Button, vice president, Microsoft Developer Tools Management, Microsoft
Corp. "Rational has done a stellar job of integrating their tools in the
Visual Studio .NET environment and providing valuable functionality to
developers."
    "Rational XDE Professional, combined with IBM WebSphere Studio Application
Developer, provides all developers with a common Enterprise solution, whether
they are utilizing rigorous and long-lived models, lightweight disposable
models, or prefer to work with Java source code," said Lee Nackman, vice
president of Application Development Tools, IBM. "Our joint solution, built
on the IBM WebSphere Studio Workbench, is flexible, intuitive, and scalable
enough to become an indispensable part of what developers do."
    "Today, the bulk of independent software vendors (ISVs), systems
integrators and in-house developers have consolidated their development
efforts around Microsoft or Java platforms," said senior Gartner analyst, Mark
Driver. "While Microsoft and Java technologies are becoming de facto choices
for the vast majority of new e-business initiatives, Gartner believes that
neither platform will dominate these markets through 2006. Instead, most
large enterprises will continue to deploy Microsoft and Java technologies.
Developers working on either platform will be faced with challenges and
opportunities for which they will need new skills, best practices and
integrated development tools to capitalize on these technologies."

    Rational XDE Professional Liberates Developers
    Rational XDE Professional has capabilities that help jump-start and
accelerate development projects:

    -- A powerful, customizable pattern engine that provides 80 patterns,
       including "Gang of Four" patterns, ensures that developers never need
       to start with a blank slate. Design teams can also create their own
       customized patterns from known good solutions to common problems,
       accelerating application development;

    -- Instant UML(TM), which empowers developers to accomplish more in less
       time through UML visualization and documentation support, forward and
       reverse engineering, and a choice of automated or on-demand roundtrip
       engineering synchronization--all presented in a way that enables
       developers to learn and use UML while writing code.

    The eXtended Development Experience
    To support a complete eXtended Development Experience and enhance
creativity throughout the software development lifecycle, Rational has
augmented Rational XDE Professional with the following:

    -- Rational Developer Network(SM)'s comprehensive content and skill-
       building resources targeted to Rational XDE Professional users;

    -- Rational Development Accelerators(TM) specifically designed for
       Rational XDE Professional, which provide assets that include reference
       applications, as well as tool automation, examples and guidance;

    -- Two new, lightweight developer-focused Rational Unified Process(R)
       configurations, one for Microsoft .NET and one for Java, that offer
       specialized best practices for Rational XDE Professional;

    -- Integration with requirements management and analysis capabilities for
       users of Rational RequisitePro(R), Rational Suite(R) AnalystStudio(R),
       and Rational Suite(R) DevelopmentStudio, to empower teams to identify
       problems and define solutions;

    -- Integration with software configuration management and integrated
       defect and change tracking in Rational(R) ClearCase(R), which enables
       developers to efficiently manage change and complexity;

    -- Rational University Web-based training courses for Rational XDE
       Professional. Select courses are available free from March 2002 until
       mid-June 2002.

    "Rational XDE Professional, developed in conjunction with IBM and
Microsoft, provides developers with a more efficient way to design and write
code by enabling them to work directly within their IDE of choice," said Mike
Devlin, co-founder and chief executive officer, Rational Software. "This
frictionless integration with leading IDEs liberates developers from time-
wasting activities, which simplifies and accelerates Java and Microsoft Visual
Studio .NET development."
    Rational XDE Professional complements the Rational Suite(R) family of
products and increases the development environments that Rational supports.
Developers of C# in Microsoft Visual Studio .NET, Java/J2EE in IBM WebSphere
Studio Application Developer, or who looking for a new Java IDE can all use
Rational XDE Professional with Rational Suite. Developers using other Java
IDEs or the current version of Microsoft Visual Studio .NET can use Rational
Rose(R) and Rational Suite. Additional information on Rational XDE
