The 6' x 8' mural, a tribute to the spirit of the 2002 Olympic Winter
Games, will be on public display Feb. 7 during a community event at Washington
Square at the start of the 2002 Games festivities in Salt Lake City. During
the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, visitors will be able to see the Peter Max
mural at the Coca-Cola Pin Trading Center in downtown Salt Lake Olympic
Square.
The mural design also will be offered as a commemorative poster with
proceeds benefiting the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
"Through this Olympic mural, I am able to share the inspiration and
creativity of children across the country with the people of Salt Lake City
and athletes and visitors from around the world," said Max. "It is my hope
that through this special tribute to Salt Lake City, people from all walks of
life will feel united in the celebration of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games."
Finita Maka, 15, and Rosemary Williams, 17, members of Boys & Girls Clubs
of Greater Salt Lake, created artwork that is featured in Max's design and
helped Max unveil the mural today. The Olympic mural is an acrylic on canvas
featuring Max's unique rendition of the American flag with red and white
stripes, stars and Max's signature heart design. Approximately 100 pieces of
children's artwork from 38 states are interwoven in the seven white stripes of
the flag.
"Nothing inspires young people at our Clubs more than an opportunity to
display their artistic talent. Thanks to our friends Coca-Cola and Peter Max,
Clubs across the nation have provided kids a chance to show their stuff. Boys
& Girls Clubs of America is proud to be the national partner of Coca-Cola and
honored to work with Peter Max on this project," said Roxanne Spillett,
president of Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
The children's artwork featured in the mural is part of the Coca-Cola
Olympic Torch Relay "Community Canvas" Art Contest. Coca-Cola invited young
people from more than 120 Boys & Girls Clubs and other youth programs along
the Torch Relay route to submit original artwork depicting inspirational
people, places or events in their communities. Max used the original creations
from these young artists to design the mixed media original work of art.
"We created the Coca-Cola Olympic Torch Relay Community Canvas Art Contest
to give youth across the country a chance to share in the spirit of the 2002
Olympic Winter Games. We hope this artwork will serve as a legacy and lasting
reminder of Olympic festivities for Salt Lake City," said Quinton Martin, vice
president, Coca-Cola North America.
Max also will create a special commemorative poster featuring a rendition
of the signature mural that will provide fans across the country with a
keepsake of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. It will be available for $25 at
Coca-Cola's online shopping experience, http://www.coca-colastore.com .
Coca-Cola and Peter Max are donating proceeds from sales of the poster to the
Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
Peter Max has created works of art for five former U. S. presidents,
including Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George Bush and Bill

Artist for the Super Bowl, The World Cup USA in 1994, the U.S. Tennis Open and
the NHL All-Star Game.
