CSIA Congratulates Winners of the 2007 RSA Conference Award for Excellence in the Field of Public Policy

Deborah Platt Majoras and Senator Joe Simitian Recognized for Leadership in
Combating Identity Theft Crimes and Introducing California Data Breach
                                Legislation

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 6 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Cyber Security
Industry Alliance (CSIA) today applauded the two co-winners of the 2007 RSA
Conference Award for Public Policy: Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Chairman
Deborah Platt Majoras and California State Senator Joe Simitian (D-Palo
Alto). This award recognizes Majoras' and Simitian's significant
contributions in the field of cyber security public policy.
Since 2004, Majoras has aggressively spearheaded the FTC's outreach to
businesses, consumers and law enforcement to help combat identity theft
crimes, spyware and spam. Majoras currently serves as co-chair of President
Bush's Identity Theft Task Force and recently helped establish the FTC's
Division of Privacy and Information Protection. In addition, Majoras played
a key role in rolling out the FTC's highly successful OnGuard Online and
"AvoID Theft: Deter. Detect. Defend" campaigns. Under her leadership,
Majoras and the FTC team have brought more than a dozen cases against firms
such as ChoicePoint, which failed to implement reasonable security
procedures to protect the sensitive consumer information they collected.
As co-author of California Senate Bill 1386 (SB 1386), Senator
Simitian's efforts have had a significant impact on the reporting of data
breaches in the United Sates. SB 1386, the nation's first breach
notification law, has enabled Californians affected by data breaches to
take immediate steps to protect their identities. SB 1386 also provides an
exemption for breaches of encrypted data, which has fostered broader
adoption of encryption as an industry best practice. Over the past year,
Simitian has strongly advocated that SB1386 be adopted at the federal
level. Simitian has also authored additional legislation including the
Online Privacy Protection Act (OPPA) of 2003 (AB 68) and Assembly Bill 1219
(AB 1219) which assists victims of criminal identity theft in rectifying
criminal records wrongfully associated with their name.
"Chairman Majoras and Senator Simitian have made great strides to lay a
solid foundation for and improve the way our nation deals with identity
theft crimes and data breach notifications," said Liz Gasster, acting
executive director and general counsel for CSIA. "Cyber-related crimes are
escalating rapidly in both the U.S. and abroad, and their fundamental
efforts to protect citizens' sensitive, personal information have not gone
unnoticed. CSIA congratulates both of these leaders for their unfaltering
excellence in public policy."
Deborah Platt Majoras was sworn in on August 16, 2004 as Chairman of
the FTC. She joined the FTC from Jones Day in Washington, D.C., where she
served as a partner in the firm's antitrust section. In 2001, she was
appointed Deputy Assistant Attorney General at the U.S. Department of
Justice Antitrust Division and became Principal Deputy in 2002.
Senator Simitian has been serving the 11th Senate District of
California since November 2004. His district includes the San Mateo County
cities of Atherton, East Palo Alto, Menlo Park, Redwood City, and San
Carlos, Santa Clara County cities of Campbell, Cupertino, Los Altos, Los
Altos Hills, Palo Alto, and parts of San Jose and over half of Santa Cruz
County. He previously served as an Assemblyman for four years representing
the residents of the 21st District and prior to that, he served as Mayor of
Palo Alto.
