Hello Direct Awarded Patent for Optical Switch In Headsets

Cordless Headset Users Can Control Calls by Swinging Microphone
                               Boom Up or Down

SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Hello Direct, Inc. (Nasdaq:
HELO), the leading developer and direct marketer of telephone productivity
products and a pioneer in headset technology, announced today that the U.S.
Patent Office recently issued Patent No. 6,016,347 for Hello Direct's optical
switching mechanism used in its Cordless(TM) XLT telephone headset. This is
the 14th U.S. patent issued to Hello Direct for technological developments;
numerous other patents are pending.
"Hello Direct's optical switch is another example of our customer-focused
design innovations that improve ergonomics while ensuring reliability,"
according to Dion Blundell, Director of Product Marketing at Hello Direct.
"The simplicity of our cordless headset's controls is a significant advantage
for business users who must project professionalism over the phone."
The optical switch is located inside the microphone boom of the Cordless
XLT headset, and is used to turn the headset on, mute the microphone, and turn
the headset off. When Hello Direct's patented ReadiLine(R) remote answering
device is installed, the user can answer a call remotely by swinging the
microphone boom down. The headset signals the ReadiLine to lift the handset
on the user's phone, and the call is connected. This intuitive control makes
using a cordless headset simple. The patented optical switch is noise free,
as well as smaller and more reliable than typical mechanical switches.

Hello Direct's pioneering work in telephone productivity
Hello Direct developed and introduced the first cordless headset nine
years ago to give business users full mobility to find files, confer with
co-workers, and check fax machines during calls. Cordless headsets, including
Hello Direct's newest, the Cordless XLT, are connected to the handset ports of
proprietary or digital business telephones to preserve the multiple lines,
displays, and feature keys used in business telephony. Hello Direct developed
the ReadiLine accessory to lift the handset automatically even when the user
is 100 feet away from the phone.
