Sun Microsystems, Inc. Acquires Trustbase Limited And JCP Computer Services Limited

New Solutions Join iPlanet E-Commerce Solutions Portfolio and Accelerate
The Development and Deployment of Business-to-Business
                    E-Commerce for Financial Institutions

PALO ALTO, Calif., Feb. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Sun Microsystems, Inc.
(Nasdaq: SUNW) today announced the acquisition of Trustbase Limited, a
London-based, privately held company, whose wholly-owned subsidiary, JCP
Computer Services Limited, provides unique, highly secure public key
infrastructure (PKI) enabling technology for the world's leading financial
institutions. JCP's technology will be integrated with iPlanet(TM) E-Commerce
Solutions, a Sun-Netscape Alliance, offering financial institutions one of the
most complete and secure business-to-business infrastructure solutions
available.
"The development and deployment of new online business-to-business
services is unstoppable, as is customer demand for products that deliver the
reliable, scalable and secure environments necessary for success in the .com
world," said John Hake, director of worldwide financial services at Sun
Microsystems. "With the acquisition of JCP's unique technology, Sun and
iPlanet E-Commerce Solutions will help make secure business-to-business
e-commerce a reality, first at financial institutions and ultimately across
all online business-to-business."
Business-to-business e-commerce is a growing segment and according to
analysts reports, expected revenue will top $1.3 trillion by 2003. Currently,
online business-to-business e-commerce is a simple two party model involving
buyer and seller. Financial institutions are in a prime position to offset
electronic transaction risks by offering commerce facilitation services
online. By bringing these services online, financial institutions will be
able to carry out a larger volume of commercial transactions electronically.
With the integration of JCP's technology, Sun and iPlanet E-Commerce
Solutions will be able to offer a commercial infrastructure to resolve
identity issues and provide a basis for a business framework for these
services. This will help banks accelerate their plans to implement service
provider models and facilitate new business-to-business service offerings.
"The Trustbase and JCP acquisition firmly establishes a leadership role
for iPlanet E-Commerce Solutions in the exploding financial services market
and the Net Economy," said Mark Tolliver, president and general manager of
iPlanet E-Commerce Solutions. "JCP's solution, the first Identrus-compliant
product available on the market, combined with the iPlanet product portfolio
further extends the iPlanet competitive advantage with the worlds leading
financial institutions."
JCP's technology is already being developed as part of the product
offering from Identrus, a private company backed by some of the world's
leading financial institutions. Identrus has a charter to establish the
standards for and operate a global infrastructure that will accelerate
high-value trading between corporate customers and conclusively identify
online trading partners for business-to-business transactions. The Identrus
system, in addition to supporting all Internet commerce authentication
requirements, will potentially facilitate new corporate Internet banking
services such as electronic funds transfer and payment, bill presentment and
payment, online procurement, cash management services and others.
"A critical need for the development of business-to-business e-commerce is
the role of financial institutions as trusted third-parties for secure
transactions," said Kristin Kupres, chief operating and technology officer for
Identrus. "The iPlanet solution will ultimately help to position financial
institutions as e-commerce intermediaries, effectively removing the barriers
to complete business-to-business e-commerce."
With this acquisition, Trustbase and JCP become wholly-owned subsidiaries
of Sun. JCP's employees, including the management team, will join iPlanet
E-Commerce Solutions.
JCP's existing solution, Trustbase, is a platform that enables
organizations to implement policy, manage access and mitigate the risks of
trading online. These solutions are fundamental to the development of risk
mediated electronic commerce. JCP's technology will be integrated into
iPlanet E-Commerce Solutions' industry leading e-commerce solution set,
providing more robust and scalable enterprise solutions for e-commerce
customers. JCP's products will become part of a multiplatform iPlanet
e-commerce infrastructure solution in the future including integrating
Trustbase with the iPlanet Certificate Management System, iPlanet Directory
Server and iPlanet Application Server software. Sun and iPlanet E-Commerce
Solutions will begin selling and supporting the JCP products immediately.
