UXBRIDGE, England, February 2, 2000 -- Heinz (NYSE: HNZ) announced today
that it is to explore the opportunities to expand the Linda McCartney food
range on a global scale.
The babyfood-to-beans manufacturer acquired the licence to manufacture the
successful Linda McCartney meals range as part of its acquisition of United
Biscuits Frozen and Chilled Foods last December.
Now Heinz is keen to determine the international potential for the Linda
McCartney range.
Linda McCartney launched her range of vegetarian meals in 1991. Her food
became an instant hit with families all over Britain and rapidly rose to
become UK market leader in vegetarian meals.
After leading the British market, it was Linda's wish that her meals would
become available to customers around the world.
Now Heinz, whose products are already established worldwide, is to examine
adding Linda's food as another global variety.
The news has been welcomed by Paul McCartney, who said: "This is what
Linda wanted, to share her pioneering vision with a global food giant who
could get her veggie meals on dinner plates around the planet."
As well as the Linda McCartney range, Heinz also now owns or makes under
licence a number of well-known frozen food brands. These include the Hula
Hoops and Harry Ramsden frozen potato food ranges; McVities, American Dream,
Jane Asher and Go Ahead! Desserts; and San Marco and Go Ahead! pizzas.
These now line up alongside Heinz Bean Cuisine, Heinz Baked Bean Pizzas
and the Weight Watchers from Heinz range.
