Mallinckrodt Launches New Optistar(TM) MR Contrast Delivery System in United States Following FDA Approval

ST. LOUIS, Feb. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Mallinckrodt Inc. (NYSE: MKG), an
established leader in contrast media, sold its first Liebel-Flarsheim brand
Optistar(TM) MR contrast power injectors in the United States in January,
following the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) December 1999
clearance for the company to market the device. The product is also being
sold in Canada. Power injectors are used to introduce contrast media into the
body in a controlled manner.
"We're extremely excited about the Optistar power injector," said Bradley
J. Fercho, president of Mallinckrodt's Imaging Group. "Its wide variety of
beneficial options will make it a valuable addition to MRI labs around the
country.
"The fact that our first sale in the rapidly growing MR injector market
was to Washington University's prestigious Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology
in St. Louis is a solid commentary on Optistar's quality. This product is
another indication of Mallinckrodt's commitment to being a single-source
supplier for the contrast imaging market."
The Optistar MR contrast delivery system provides fast, easy and versatile
contrast delivery to facilitate simple and efficient dynamic magnetic
resonance imaging (MRI) procedures. Among the options available with Optistar
are:

-- A quick and easy loading system for empty or prefilled syringes.
-- The ability to preprogram options, creating faster procedures and
       customized parameters for each patient.
-- Responsive touch-screen controls to quickly set the amount of contrast
or saline and the rate of injection.
-- The ability to switch from injection to drip mode at any time, thereby
       ensuring patency.
-- A convenient battery and charger pack to power the system.
-- A multicolored LED screen that makes all elements easy to read, even
       from wide angles.
-- Start and stop controls that can be operated either from a central
console or at the patient's side.

Mallinckrodt estimates the market for power injectors to be in the range
of $35 million a year.
