NEW YORK, Feb. 9 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Following is a statement
from Moctar Cheine, a Mauritanian Human Rights Advocate:
Next month, the people of Mauritania will celebrate a landmark in the
history of their country: On March 11, 2007, every citizen can exercise the
privilege to vote in the nation's first free election. Along with the
thousands who support free enterprise and peace in Mauritania, I urge you
to join me in favor of the only candidate who has proven that he can bring
prosperity, vision, and democracy to the region: Mr. Ahmed Ould Daddah.
In his four decades of public service, Mr. Ahmed Ould Daddah -- an
experienced economist and an unwavering advocate for peace and justice in
Mauritania -- has demonstrated his ability to lead his country toward
economic solvency. His impressive credentials underscore his strong
candidacy: From 1973 to 1978, Mr. Ahmed Ould Daddah served as the governor
of the Central Bank in Mauritania -- followed by his role as Mauritania's
finance minister n 1978. In addition, between 1971 and 1973, he worked as
the director ceneral for the National Company for Import and Export.
Finally, he worked as the primary advisor to the government of Central
African Republic in its transactions with The World Bank between 1986 and
1991. In 1992 he headed the Union of Democratic Forces (UFD) until it was
abandoned by the authoritarian regime of Mr. Ould Taya's in 2000. Then in
2001 he became the leader of the Rally of Democratic Forces (RFD), today
"the country's biggest political force" after the latest Mauritanian
parliamentary election. Mr. Ahmed Ould Daddah has proven that he is
prepared to lead Mauritania toward the dawn of a powerful democracy.
In fact, of the candidates who seek the office of president in the
upcoming election, Mr. Ahmed Ould Daddah is by far the most qualified --
and the most concerned with bringing a true democracy to Mauritania. To
that end, Mr. Ahmed Ould Daddah was the only credible, pro-human rights
leader who publicly spoke out against Mr. Ould Taya's tyrannical regime.
That's exactly why Mr. Ahmed Ould Daddah has already garnered the support
and respect of leaders, both in Mauritania and around the world.
Most importantly, Mr. Ahmed Ould Daddah represents a significant new
era in the history of Mauritania: He is the new face of democracy, peace,
and economic growth. He will be an effective partner to the United States
in fighting the war on terrorism; because of his long-standing experience,
he will bring American investments and free trade that will stabilize
Mauritania after 20 years of authoritarian rule. No other candidate will
play a more important role in instating democratic ideas that will
eventually lead to the development of Mauritania and its neighboring
countries.
I assure you that if Mr. Ahmed Ould Daddah is elected next March, the
United States will gain its strongest ally yet in the region. I hope I can
count on you to support his candidacy.
